I have an MTH Z-1000 Transformer and currently one MTH Loco. I can get the train running using variable voltage on the track. Works fine. Bells, Whistle, etc. I want to set the power once and control the train using command/Control/DCS. Do I only need to procure the the handheld controller? New to O-Scale so I'm coming up to speed. Thanks for any guidance.

You need a TIU and either a handheld or the WIU and a smart device.
You can also use the DCS Explorer, DCS Commander, or DCS Remote Commander rather than a TIU and handheld or the TIU, WIU, and smart device. However, these are all much more limited and not expansion-friendly.
Thanks Andy. Do you think anyone will pick up making new TIUs? Do they have limited runs? The price for the TIU and HH is running between $800-$1000 used on eBay.
New TIU's from MTH are on the horizon. Get one on preorder.

While the prices are high these days, don't pay that much! Watch the train auctions, Trainz and other reputable dealers, and the f/s section on the forum - you will find a set for a much lower price. A division of the "new" MTH is supposed to make a new wifi version of the TIU soon, but it will use the app for control, not a dedicated remote (plenty of debate about that elsewhere on the forum).
