Help please: standard gauge barn find

I don't know anything about McCoy, but that is a great find. The ZW is worth more than what you paid, so no harm there.

The 10E is most likely Lionel with a McCoy motor. Not unusual, it was an inexpensive way to fix an old loco.

The loco, motor and cars are original Lionel.  The motor appears to be Lionel with a replacement McCoy pickup plate and MEW wheels.  Ballpark retail estimate is around $150-$200, less the transformer.

Get some baby wipes with no scent or alcohol. A little gentle cleaning with them will do a lot to clean them up. Great find, enjoy. Beware...the standard gauge can be addictive!

Thanks, Jim. I’m going to need plenty of advice as this is new territory for me. Love how the stuff looks. When I was a kid at train swaps, I used to stare at the standard gauge gear in awe.

Thanks, Paul. I assume I service the motor just as I would a postwar loco. Love the analog gear that I can work on myself.

Clean the brushes and commutator. Use some electrical cleaner on the rest of the motor. I use CRC. I use medium synthetic oil on bearings etc...white lithium grease on the gear teeth. I usually put a little oil on and run it a little to work it in. Then add a little more. It's like breaking the motor back in again. Plus...NO ELECTRONICS!!!

Waking up an old engine that has been enjoyed in the past is quite fulfilling. Please post some pics and video of you progress please!

While you are inside the ZW changing the power cord, check the binding posts. Don't be surprised if you have to replace several (all?) of them. I'd swap out the breaker for a new solid state one just because. Then you know you have a good one. Also look at the rollers. They should roll freely and not have a flat side on the contact surface. Replacement parts are all readily available. I suspect Henning's or any other well stocked train shop will have what you need.

Got lots of rusty track to clean, but will revive this thread when I make some headway. Thanks for your help.

Good advice on the ZW. I may fix it up and sell it as I already have one, unless people think I need that much power for this train. I was planning to use my 1033 or KW for the Christmas tree loop. 

Great find. I agree it appears to be an original Lionel motor with McCoy replacement parts. Everything in the photos suggest that a little patience and TLC could probably get this set running. Beware, tinplate is addictive....

Looks like you are in BIG trouble Kevin. You may need to make room for some standard gauge track in the attic. What a great find. Have fun repairing and getting it running.

SG motors like a little more voltage than PW transformers generally supply.  with the #10, you should be OK, but, if you get in any deeper, you might want to find a Prewar V or Z.

Hi Mark. I live near Monterey and there seem to be few if any bigger gauge people around. Lots of HO. So finding something like this once in awhile feels very lucky!
