Well, the defective-out-of-box jinx hit me for the first time.  I received my new Lionel 0-6-0 dockside switcher earlier in the week and tried to test run it today.  The wheel have free movement when powered or not (which surprised me since all my modern era engines do not).  The engine does not move forward or back, but the e-unit does work as does the directional light.

I thought I'd try to remove the top to inspect for loose wires, but after removing 9 screws, the top still wouldn't budge.

Anyone have any advice on getting the top off or similar experience with the little docksider.  I really like the engine and would love to get it working.

Thanks!

Like Drydock said, the wheels on your Lionel 0-6-0 should not spin freely with no power.  Something is wrong in there.  If you send it in to Lionel, the turnaround time is quick.

To remove the shell, there are I believe six screws to remove...two under cab, two at rear, and two under the steam chest.  Also there are two angled wires/irons that come off the front by cow catcher and attach to the boiler.  They pop out at the boiler and swing away.  Then your shell will lift off.

Thanks everyone.  I figured the worm gear was the problem.

It dawned on me that there's a silver lining here.  Although I live in the Cleveland area, I'm going to be in Canfield 1 day/week for the foreseeable future just 2 miles down the road from Lionel's Repair Center.  I'll drop it off in person later this week.  I met a few of the guys at the old TAS, including Mike Reagan, when they were open and had them do some upgrades for me.  Maybe I'll get a chance to see some of the same folks.
