I may have shot myself in the foot.  My cattle have been a bit sluggish getting through the coral portion of this accessory.  The movement through the car seems reasonable however.

So I purchased some post-war type cattle with the fingers on the bottom.  Not sure if they are actually post-war originals or reproductions.  Bottom line is they hardly move at all.

I have checked the four cap nuts holding the floor of the coral in place and they are snug.  I experimented loosening them slightly, but that made things worse.

I'm now thinking maybe the mohair bottoms on the newer cattle that came with the set are better.  If so, maybe I could simply cut the fingers off the latest cows I purchased and stick some mohair to the bottoms.

Question is, where can I get the correct mohair ?

I looked into the thread you posted.  PAPER TRW Todd posted these part numbers.  However I don't know if they are Lionel or AF numbers.

I checked with Jeff at the Train Tender but he doesn't have the mohair pads.

"Here are the applicable part numbers. They used to pop-up from time-to-time, but I haven't seen 'em in years."

"610-9800-052 Cattle and Pad assembly"
"610-9800-055 Cattle (no pad)"

"610-9800-056 Adhesive pad only"

"Regards,

Todd"

I contacted the Lionel Store and a very nice gentleman got back to me in less than 24 hours.  He doesn't have a source for the material Lionel used but suggested I search for mohair on the web.  Upon close examination of the pads, it does look like what I believe is mohair.  But if you look closely there are ribs in the material that run perpendicular to the length of the cow. I'm also going to look at moleskin.
