I’m sure I can fix this but need a hint on taking it apart.  The metal arm under the coupler, that is part of the locking mechanism, was assembled incorrectly.  If the fix is easy I’ll DIY and skip the return hassle.

Take it back, they are riveted in place and would have to be drilled out.

Thanks for the reply, I don’t see any way to disassemble either, but I see Lionel sells individual parts as well as the complete coupler.

Unfortunately there were other problems with the set, which was a Christmas gift from my wife.  The locomotive arrived with the power truck loose and the screws stuck to the magne-traction wheels.  Also missing is the rear shell attachment bracket and screw, and the protective cardboard box insert.   I reattached the truck and the locomotive runs well enough.

Looks like I’ll have to pursue a return, of fix it myself.  FYI - this was purchased “new” from a forum sponsor.   A simple inspection prior to shipping would have revealed the locomotive wasn’t intact prior to shipping - disappointing.

Agreed, a simple look see would have solved the issue. But the store probably did not have the time or want to open for inspection anything. I am sure some customers would scream not new……it’s the old no good turn goes unpunished.. lmao
