Id just won a S1 dulpex unskirted 3rd rail.. I saw and compaired both MHT and Lionals S1 duplexs sound.. Well The Lional sounds alot better then MTH..Wanted to know how hard is it to install? Might be picking up a TMCC taken out of a train.

Are you wanting to install the TMCC/RailSounds package? One question, does the package you're getting have Lionel's cruise control? If so, you may be doing some additional work since you likely aren't getting the proper flywheel and sensor for the TMCC motor driver.
Does your S1 have a chuff switch? That's another thing that the TMCC package will require for proper sound.
as for the S1 having chuf switch? I dont know? I havent gotton the S1 yet. The TMCC came out of the cabforward has rail sound5 ..the guy took all electronics out of it to run MTH DSC proto sound 2 system...I know you should be able to switch the sound chip.. looks just like QSI setup.
Well, I don't know about just switching the sound chip in the RS5 board, I think you'll need to use the whole RS board set.
The RS5 boards are nothing like the QSI board set, the only similarity is they both use PLCC chips for their sound processor.
id looked at lionals parts list and compaired them..there different parts numbersDam.wished they where the same, couldve saved me some money.looks like i have to buy piece by piece to do my 3rd rail S1 sound system.whos does Lional sound system? QSI?
If you have the TMCC/RailSounds package from another locomotive, I'd figure out what you have first. You should have most of the parts you need. I've installed several TMCC packages in different locomotives, normally I needed very little extra.
i have a chance to get one from a new cab forword loco with tmcc railsound5,,all electrics taken out of it even speaker and smoke unit, switches and sencers
Well, you have what you need. As I previously stated, since I'm guessing something that new probably had Odyssey, what you won't have is the proper flywheel and maybe the sensor for the speed control. Personally, I'd probably just replace the DCDR-S driver board with the ERR Cruise Commander M and not try to deal with the flywheel and sensor issue.
With that package, I can't see why you need any of the RailSounds stuff from Lionel, it should be included.
trying to get ahold of lional techs stinks put you on hold forever without answering...i think i would need to get/change is the sound bord to the S1 for what i see on lional parts list.and proubley maybe flywheel setup??.yes both trains have odysseys systems..The guy put all mth electronics in the cabforword from the tender to the engine..I do realy love the Lionals S1 sound compard to MTH..S1 sounds more real and very heavy chugs and that whisel is very eerie plus it has the steam horn too..because at the end of her days the S1 had one..plus My S1 is the unskired version..
Does the odyssey system use a tach reader? That'd be the only reason to change the flywheel .Most TMCC boards use feedback so the flywheel doesn't matter.
So your the guy that bought that jumble of wires off the Bay LOL.
It'll be nice with railsounds 5 .hope you get it all working.
David
The odyssey uses a motor encoder(tach reader). It would be best to install a Cruise "M" as John said above. In doing so you will never need the encorder and you will have better control.

Yes, there is a special flywheel and an encoder pickup on one of the motors. This will be very difficult to duplicate, hence my suggestion for the ERR CCM.

So now I know why I hate odyssey . The cruise commander is very nice easy to install too.

ok I didnt get it.. was wondering about theses that a guy is selling.. which one should I get? Plus i did some resurce on my S1 it was made in 1999.. so does it have QSI or TMCC? Train hasnt arrived yet.

There no way of telling if an engine has TMCC or not unless you have the model number.
Now if it doesn't my absolute very bestest advice to you is to Call Ken at ERR.
http://www.electricrr.com/
They're the makers of the commander series TMCC and sound boards and he can tell you exactly what you'll need.
Plus at this site you can look at the manuals and see what your getting yourself into.

For discounts on the ERR stuff, check with Boxcar Bill on this forum, he is an ERR dealer. His site is Modern Toy Train Parts.
If this is a Lionel locomotive, it won't have QSI sound.

But like the indian said in the cartoon.

Well, that's a good point David. I guess we'll have to wait for him to crack the case.

Sounds like fun work to me?
Where else could you flip them the bird and they not get mad about it than a turkey plant
David
You can't buy anything but the generic sound boards, at least that's what I've been told. You can use the S1 sounds if you can get them. I've swapped the sound chips on a number of RS4 boards.
man Im not happy now!! thought i could pickup my train at the ups customer service office today but there closed!! on the UPS website they show they was open on sat!! Dam Id wished they sent it by USPS other wise i would have it now..i guess i have to wait on monday..going to have my fatherinlaw pick it up..pickup time monday-thurs 4-6..and i have to go to work at 3:00..i hate to wait..been thinking about that s1 all this week..
alright got the train tonight..she got qsi proto sound!!!! havent tried it yet to see what it sounds like. just heard horn,,battery is dead..Going to do some repairs work on the boiler first..got it at a auction and they didnt state how bad it was,,the damaged..but boy this is a BIG TRAIN!!! 36 1/4 LONG!!!!this has three bords stack on top of each other!! WONDER IF THIS BORD COULD BE A PROTO SOUND 2 or 3?
Pictures would help, hard to say what you have. How about part numbers from the boards. With QSI on the boards, I'm thinking ProtoSound 1.
The CW-80 has issues with some electronics, I had a problem with a ProtoSound 1 locomotive and the CW-80, worked fine with a KW.
I've tried a number of times to buy different sound chips, no go at all.

with lional parts dept? on the sound..was going to buy complete sound bord with chip if possible??..
They won't sell the board unless you have an exchange.
