A freight CAT????
It's a 50/50 proposition. I asked for a MTH WIU. Equal odds that I will get a pack of socks. It will either be under the tree, or not. My wife's gift has already arrived. I am 90% sure my older son may be getting the aluminum drink can crusher from Harbor Freight.
Worse case, a very nice lady in Pa is painting a locomotive for me. There is a chance I will have it before the end of the year.
My daughter asked if there was a train related item that I'd like for Christmas this year and this afternoon, I told her about the AA F7s that are on the way. She is picking up half of the tab. Since these suddenly appeared and I didn't wish to let them get away (Don't have any diesels as yet) her gift will be greatly appreciated. (We skipped putting up the tree last year, but there will definitely be a train running around that corner this year.)
Santa is bringing my wife the PEZ mint car for her PEZ collection, and I am getting the Atlas Tiona Refining tank car from my daughter. I sure hope Santa is not delayed this year!

There are PEZ train cars now?WOW!!
I know I will, as wife had me pick them out and buy them. She will wrap them for me.
Unless I gift myself, I won't be getting anything train related. Oh, I've already done it.....
Same situation applies to me, Dan!
Same as Dan & Jim.
I know for a fact I'm getting at least two train items for Christmas.
My wife is the best!

Same here as you guys. I ordered the steam locomotive I have always wanted. It came brand new in its shipper. My wife is going to wrap it and put it under the tree. Well here's the rub on it for me:
Even though I know what it is, it is going to be one he77 of a thrill to open it up and un box it on Christmas morning. I am not sure if I am going to take it down to the layout or run it on the tracks in conventional under the tree. Nick
I know it's complete madness, but you know for the last couple of years I went to the trouble to run Legacy and DCS under the tree on a simple oval just so I could enjoy the full feature set of a couple of models?! Lionchief alone should have been plenty of whiz-bang. Sanity doesn't prevail in my quarter...

If we were able to leave well enough alone we wouldn't be train guys. HA Nick
It can happen!
I usually tell my wife, “Thanks for the perfect Christmas present. It’s just what I wanted!” after I have bought myself something toy train related in the weeks before the holiday. However, as I said in my post in another topic in April of 2018 and shown below, it is possible to get a cool toy train gift unexpectedly.
Merry Christmas and here’s hoping you get what you want (if you’ve been nice, that is.)
Alan
“I am late in catching up with this topic, and I am not sure this qualifies as either "bought" or "lately," but I sure think it is cool.
“While primarily a low-grade S gauge operator/collector, I do enjoy my modest collection of Marx 6" tinplate trains, toys and accessories. It has been years since I found a really interesting train at a thrift store or flea market, but I occasionally find myself accompanying my wife to one or the other. To give myself something to look for, I seek out tinplate candy and cookie tins and the like that I think can look good on a tinplate setup.
“At some time last year, I must have mentioned this to my sister who is an experienced thrift shopper, both for her own use and for vintage items to sell in her own shop.
“I was already the envy of the room when it turned out that this great old train (actually airline) case under the tree turned out to be my gift from her.
“Imagine my further surprise and delight when I opened the case:
“Actually the tall can in the first pic was a gift from my other sister who hosted the Christmas get together and was a co-conspirator in the hunt. What's more, each can contained an additional small gift. Not only a great tinplate acquisition, but very easy to pack for the trip back to Oregon.”
Cheers!
Alan
That's cool.

You got that right!
I am positive I will not get any train or train related item for Christmas. There is no place to put it.
On the other hand my Grandson, who lives with me now, will be getting a nice NASCAR set courtesy of Vince in North Carolina. He will have to find clues, follow directions and go on a scavenger hunt throughout the house to find all the pieces of the train.
Never. Any train related gifts to me are my responsibility.
At this point, picking out train gifts is up to me. I have one on the way thanks to the ogr forum for sale board! I generally don't shop that early so it is entirely possible another could slip in!
This year the Mrs. is asking about getting me some tools like a small metal brake, which is pretty cool. Now if I actually had time to do stuff it would be even better!!!
Well, I suggested several items throughout the year and passed on to my wife.
There is a high probability she will have ordered them, and since my memory is fairly spotty these days, there is a good chance I will not remember exactly what I asked here to get.
Therefore, surprise - surprise!
Merry Christmas all.
I know I'm getting 2 Atlas O 40' AT&SF steel sided boxcars and a MTH Premier AT&SF 50' double door boxcar. They are on the side at my LHS waiting for my wife to buy them, wrap them, and put them under the tree.
I asked about the Premier PS3 SP cab forward they had sitting on the shelf but she said it was a bit too pricey .

still alot of people in the world today ,where " socks" would sound pretty good.......they are barefoot and have nothing.......
I know what I am getting because I have already ordered it. A year ago. Or it seems that long.
Bah humbug!
I'm impossible to buy a train gift for. If I want it (within reason), I have it, it's on preorder, or it hasn't been made yet.

When your 6 or 7 kid believe me.Kids minds do not think about that.I never been really big on getting cloths. How ever year later an aunt of mine.Got me a blue gene jacket.I showed how much I like it.Whore it until it start coming apart.
My wife suggested that I slow down my purchases for Oct/Nov/Dec. We try and do that in general so we have things to add to the list. That said, I have things ranging from $20 (Menards boxcars) to $500 (MTH GP9) on my list. The problem is that we have a budget for extended family that's pretty low when it comes to train things.
I don't know what's coming this year but last Christmas I got a "Be the Engineer" package on an RS-3 and a early 1900s Steamer in Ely, Nevada. Nothin' like driving a coal fired steam engine through a tunnel. Smoky, hot and gritty and I loved it. Feel the power!
I'm thinkin' I'd like to drive an Amtrak Train this Christmas.
Chris S.
Just like the old Dennis the Menace song went "I'm gettin' nuttin' for Christmas !"
I always buy a Christmas train present (or two) for myself. Just makes it easier to get exactly what I want and avoid the uh-oh factor.
Kicking around several ideas, including a 6-pack of those Menard's black tank cars.
It's looking real good that I may have a VO 1000 with a one of a kind custom paint job! I'll just need to gift wrap this to myself.
Glad I bought my Granddaughter a purple steam engine for Christmas. Maybe she won't notice that "her" purple engine (VO 1000) isn't purple anymore.
The repaint of the purple bobber caboose is going to be a more difficult propositon. I have a collection of MTH club cars that were purchased with future repaints in mind. The younger granddaughter found them and claimed the lot as "her purple train".
Only from myself.
I probably won't get anything train related and that's okay with me. A good old fashion Christmas dinner and I'm happy. It's sad there are so many people out there that will have nothing for Christmas let alone trains.
I give and get a great number of train related gifts........
I know I am.
Yep, told the wife that her Christmas presents to me will arrive today from Pats Trains. She will wrap them, put under the Christmas Tree, and the grandkids will hand out the presents Christmas morning.
There were two unexpected TrainWorld/TrainLand boxes on the front steps when I got home yesterday. I did not open them!
Jon
My wife always goes to train shows with me, because it makes her Christmas (and birthday) shopping easier. I wish she was so easy to buy for!
A lot of us seem to work out the "present" situation the same way: buy what we like and let our wives "give" them to us. I've yet to make a return. It also works for birthdays, too.
And most important, it works the other way 'round: "Oh, darling, how did you ever know I wanted that lovely ____?"
