How to get at the drive mechanism of a legacy circa 2000 EM-1

If it's not at least circa 2007, it ain't Legacy, it would be TMCC!  I'm sorry I don't remember the exact sequence of disassembly, but I've had a couple apart and I don't remember any special issues.

Thanks Keith, that is perfect.  I had searched on EM-1 but not found the thread you posted.

And voila!  Hearing that there should not be an issue getting the boiler off caused me to go back and notice that it was hung up on a detail hanging down from the cab.  Boiler came off and part of the drive shaft and U joint fell out.  So thanks for the thread on how to fix this.  I would love to have the miniature machine shop and tiny screws laying about to allow me to fix this now but will have to order some stuff.  Still, glad to have found the problem.  Maybe some two part marine epoxy would work ...

Yep, common issue with removing the boiler, sometimes it's wires, sometimes it's just a detail or something bent and interfering.

Truthfully, you can order 2mm screws from a variety of places, and the drill and tap for them is cheap as well.

An upgrade to the nylon universal joint shaft found in these locomotives, and just about all articulated scale steam locomotives is this solid steel shaft already bored for 4mm shafts commonly found in these locomotives….

I just drilled out the U joint and tried a 2-M machine screw but found it just stripped.  I ordered a tap and hopefully can soon have it at least connected.

What I am curious about is the angle the motor is making with the shaft.  It looks to be way off.  So you all have thoughts on this?

It also looks as though I would have to remove the rear drive wheels to get to the screws holding the motor bracket from below.  Any comments or advise on this would be appreciated.

You may have to remove the rear pilot truck, but certainly not the drive wheels, they're fixed in the chassis!  Usually the drive motor screws are under that rear pilot.

As far as the angle of the motor, perhaps pictures would help?

Easiest repair for your coupler ( what you’re calling the U joint ) would be to thread your hole for 4-40 and use a grub set screw similar to pictured below,…..the grub screw, the tap and the necessary drill bit you can get locally at your Ace Hardware store,……
