My problem with dirt is I can't find any. Any I can use that is. I have always collected dirt around the house and shifted it into a nice powder I used for scenery on my layout. I like a nice light brown. It looks better than any store bought "dirt" I've found as ground cover.

My problem here in Maui is it's all red dirt. In some cases really, really red dirt. I found one small dirt road they must have hauled gravel onto because it has some brown dirt in it. It's a long drive to the road. Has anyone found an good dirt I can buy? Thanks Don

You can use paint powder to change the color of your dirt.. yellow and/or white added to the dirt will lighten it up a lot. Unless of course it's bright red, then you'll end up with pink dirt.

I have buckets full of Southern California dirt road dirt that I sift down to 3 different sizes. I'd be willing to ship you some to check out, for the price of shipping. Not sure if I can Priority Mail to Hawaii or not, but I will if I can.

Hey, there's plenty of it on the nightly gnus!  Do they beam that to Maui?

J Daddy mentioned Michigan dirt.  Same as mine.  I don't know which part of Michigan he's from , but mine is under a few inches to a few feet of crystalline water ice.  And, if the 30 mph winds today blow that all away, you'd still need a jackhammer to get chunks of doit loosened for thawing before pulverizing, grinding, sifting.

Now, really, you just posted this to make us all feel bad that our -10 degree winds aren't warm and scented with plumeria blossoms.  Right, Don?

You guys don't know the hardships we go through out here in the middle of the Pacific. No

Mai Tais tell 5:00 pm (west coast time of course), having to dodge whales while in your kayak. Jumping out of the way from falling coconuts. Freezing in 76 degree weather. Oh the humanity of it all. Took this last week trying to get to town on the kayak because we were running low on Chardonnay. Don

Don, I'll get that out by tomorrow afternoon, USPS small flat rate priority box.

Clifford, I bought bags of it thinking I would need it here. It's just a little too yellow for me. I'm using it in the background. KD, you guys have had it bad enough without me kidding you about it. I'm really having a hard time finding good dirt. Everything is either red or black. Sand is about the right color but it's, well sand and it looks like it. We had wonderful powdered dirt under our last house. Wish I would have thought to bring it. And last but not least, Allan you have a package coming. Don

I see no one has stepped up to help you.  Send me a plane ticket and will check every inch of those islands for dirt.  I don't care if I have to stay there for the rest of my life looking for it!  i'LL Search every beach if I have to and I'd have to.

That's a dirty little problem you have there in Muai. How about using the lava rock we pay so dearly for in CONUS. From what I've seen on TV, cool lava over there is black.

Hey! Instant coffee should work, and it doesn't need sifting. How about some rust. Leave your car on the beach for a few months and there will be plenty of brown rust to be had. Grind up some palm tree bark, or maybe a grass skirt or two.

"The road to Hana"....now that was absolutely the best helicopter ride I have ever taken.  Almost as bad as the Skyline Drive.  Neither would be bad if they were about a half mile long.

Can you just imagine the looks on the faces of the Agricultural Customs @ the USPO with incoming soil from this forum!!  I tried to bring home some sand and got pulled aside.

HI, last I heard, is a state of the USA.  PM there should not be a problem!

What do you guys use to sift the dirt?  I plan to use good old Michigan dirt on my layout this summer when I start the scenery and was wondering what you use to sift it?

Also do your bake your dirt?  Anyone use their dirt un-baked?  I guess I could do this when the wife is away but I know she would be really ****ed if I put dirt in the oven.
