I occasionally buy Lima European and British locos in O gauge from the 70's. Last week I bought a rather nice French Diesel.

I buy these in the hope I can convert them into a suitable 3 rail loco from a donor 3 rail loco I already have. And this time I was lucky. I have a Lionel EP5 with TMCC and a Pullmore motor, a relatively recent re-release. It's a nice runner and I have another EP5. As it happens both the EP5 and the French loco have almost exactly the same wheel bases, chassis length and width. All I had to do was trim a little of cowling off both ends of the body to allow free movement of the trucks and grind about 1/8" off the ends of the chassis. Even the cab interiors with driver and offsider fitted perfectly from the EP5. I just added some extra Evan Design LEDs to both ends, and hot glued in a brass plate for the antenna, and fit the mounting brackets, and I've now got an unusual modern era French diesel. The trucks are still EP5, but I'm not a rivet counter and it looks good enough for me. Has anyone else done this?

That's very nice work. Since you mentioned you buy Lima O scale equipment, you're probably the best one to answer this question. Have you seen the Italian FS E444 electric for sale recently?

Thanks in advance,

Bob

Hi Bob, no, only in HO, yesterday on the Bay.

Hi Bob, no, only in HO, yesterday on the Bay.

Thanks Pete!

That is a wonderful conversion! I believe the sound chip can be easily removed and replaced with a diesel sound chip and unlike MTH it will have no affect on the running characteristics. I would suggest that you check with Lionel although I'm sure that there are other sources too.

Yes Stephen, the Lima engines wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. This loco has only one Pullmore motor, but it should be OK, I would have much preferred twin can motors, but the aim of this exercise is to use what I have, as I just don't know what will fit until I try it. But, seeing this one was relatively easy, I may make another.

Jim,you have the skills to do this, it is an easy conversion. All you  need is a Dremel and a hot glue gun.
