I just learned that Intermountain is producing the IC GP10s. That is almost enough to make me switch scales. I won't but I'm close.

Well, Brother Malcolm, knowing your modeling skills, I won't think it would slow you down at all to make your own. Post some photos as you build it.

I know the HO version of PRR Q2 from BLI is better scale then 3rd rail and MTH's Q2.. There Q2's looks to be on the short side..
Yeah, Those IMRC GP10s should be awesome. From what I can tell, seems to have surprised Athearn since they were also working on the Paducah rebuilts for an upcoming announcement.
I don't understand why an experienced scratchbuilder would go back to HO? With Malcolm's talent, he could scratchbuild/kitbash a red caboose GP 7/9 body to a Paducha geep. all the detailed parts can be found in brass too!

I used to own a few of that type in HO Scale.
Make sure you have very large (Long) switches for these. The Kato number 6's at the time (Which were to me very huge) made the wheels "Snap" due to the rigid wheelbase.
I will not go back to HO due to sight issues. But recall that tolerances there are rather small.
And I will offer that the engines in HO will be half the cost of O scale engines too LOL.

been there, done that.

Dont have any switches yet.. running a 11x18 track setup in my living room..running beside the walls on the floor.. Running a 3rd rail S1 unskirted duplex..pulling 14 box cars soom I hope to be pulling 25 box cars..The reason why I said HO Q2's look better is there more to true scale size compaired to MTH and 3rd rails Q2 in which they looks to be shorter then scale..
Did you compare any of the models against drawings of the real locomotives?
I am sticking with O scale and I may build a couple of the GP10 if I can pick some RC shells reasonable.
I am planning to order 2 of the IM HO models anyway.
Malcolm
What is stopping you from doing both scales?
I'd do both.
Best of both worlds!
Malcolm,
Here's a shot of Mid-South GP10 #1050 I took in Vicksburg some years ago:
My wife's friend's husband was some sort of General Manager for them and he took me to the facility one day to see the sites. I also got a few photos of IC trains in Jackson, taken while my wife was at work at the IRS office.

There's one on the OGR Buy/Sell Board now!
Here's InterMountain's announcement of the GP10:

I'm definitely in for a model of the GP10, particularly if IM releases it in Precision National green and yellow livery as these were leased by Conrail during the early days.
Thanks for the heads up, Malcolm.
Bob
Modeling a Conrail GP10 or even a GP8 from an old GP7 is a nice little project. Almost every loco was different that came out of Paducah. Many variations!
What is stopping you from doing both scales?
Good Question. IMHO you can't get the full experience with only one scale; you're leaving too much on the table, so to speak. Operating both scales may not be an option for you, but if it is, and you have the energy, you need to go for it.
