I had a conflict and couldn't swing York this Fall. I was totally bummed out. So I found that I used that as an excuse to do some Christmas shopping for myself yesterday. Was able to find online about 10 of the K-line 18" Ringling cars that my wife and boys will now be giving me! Anybody else have the same experience where you drown your sorrows with a train purchase that you might not normally have made?

Well, I've never made it to York, I just don't have the time or the cash.
I figure for what the trip would cost I can buy a Steam Engine !
That makes it a no brainer for me since that's pretty much my annual train budget.
I do occasionally treat myself to something when feeling oppressed tho.
Just in from Ebay, A Great Planes F-15 RC airplane, mostly built kit.
I crashed mine a couple years ago and was unable to get a replacement. They stopped producing this kit long ago.
Now I have another item on my to do list...
I Love the F-15 aircraft, I worked on them for most of my AF career.
I'd buy a Turbine version but simply can't justify the costs involved.
And there is no airfield anywhere around here that I can fly one from.

Southern Comfort, and by that I mean the Southern Comfort reefer that LIONEL modeled many years ago. Also reefer.
I've taken comfort by buying trains several times. So far, I have not been sorry that I did.

Yep. Recently treated myself to the one engine even York couldn't turn up for me, and at an unbeatable price too. A very nice consolation gift to myself

Last April was my first York. I found that the cost of the trip is well worth the amazing experience and access to so many great deals in such a short time that would've taken me years to find otherwise. It's understandable if the trip isn't economically feasible to begin with, but if you can afford it, do yourself a favor and go. You WILL NOT be sorry.

I live in Baltimore and York is just 45 min. up the road. I've never attended and not sure if I ever will so there's no pain for not attending. Bottom line is I don't like crowds so the local meets fill my needs. Spending $ to cure depression is no better than taking drugs or alcohol......they're just quick and temporary fixes.
ME? Some have told me I'm cheap and hard headed, maybe so , but I treated myself and my brothers to a german bologna and colby cheese sandwich on crackers, that outta cure the cheap theory.
And to solidify the theory we had seconds, I won't tell what we drank, there's young minds on here and I don't want to warp them.

Actually...yes. In fact I bought 8 passenger cars just prior to York and they are my reason for not going. (money gone)
No.
Although I would like to go someday, it does not currently affect my buying habits in any way. If I were going to go, I would probably save up several months worth of "train budget" so that I would be able to take advantage of any good deals I saw. However, I still wouldn't let the money burn a hole in my pocket. I'd only buy if it fit in with my layout theme.
Yes, I found a super price on a lionel legacy ac6000 on line and ordered it. 600.00 engine for 425.00. my christmas present.
Your premise doesn't work for me because the only reason I didn't go was no money.

Our family calls this "A Table Leg".
The story is, we took our 3 kids shopping one Saturday, the 2 girls (ages 10 and 11 at the time) had to have something to put in their hair, our son (age 7) said he didn't want anything.
After we got the girls what they wanted I had to stop at a local hardware store. On the way to check out my son grabs a wooden table leg off a rack and says he HAS TO HAVE IT!!! We realized he was upset that he didn't get anything and grabbed the first thing he could get his hands on. We convinced him he really didn't need it, but I think he ended up getting something before we got home.
Anyway, from that day, whenever the 2 of us feel we must have something just to have it, we tell each other "I need a table leg".
I'm going to pick a table leg up today...my LHS has a 25% sale going on

Yes, I treated myself to some insulated track pins! I'm a big spender!

AMEN brother! Preach on!
York is not the only place to find trains. I've found some good buys at flea markets, antique malls and my LHS. Train show prices tend to be inflated, IMO.
For most of us there are the local shows to go to.
But Trainworld has a special on metion code word "York2012" this weekend for discounts on line and phone orders!!!
There was a large group 15 or so from our train club on the west coast that flew across the country to York this weekend. They get a couple of vans and do other layout clubs, stores , manufacturer, other meets, tours etc. and have a great time as a group.
So it was slim last weekend with just a few locals to run a display at the local train show as most active members away.
