ok about a year ago I bought a conventional supposed new sd40t-2 number 4551 which lionel says is conventional . I have put it on my old layout as conventional and it ran fine smoke worked great transformer control was great so I bought a cruise commander to upgrade it opened up this supposed new engine when I got it and the fat boy speaker is in the fuel tank but not hooked up ? ok that was weird. took off the shell and there was a brown wire cut  to the snd switch ok weird then once the shell was off completely I see and antenna really weird and what looks to be an err board? and a lot of black electrical tape ?? here's a pic I know it had sound but don't see a sound board.

re-hook everything up and try addressing it if not when you get the new ERR in try changing out the R4LC board and see if that does it you might then just need to get another board for down the road to do another or contact ken if that's the problem and tell him exactly whats whats and see what he can do for you on the board he is a straight up guy has helped me a couple of times.

yea after that post I I took it back to the train room since now I knew which switch was for run program I programed it to #17 and worked just fine. so the sd sound board I bought to upgrade it also I put it in and now it works.  I use to run it on my old layout on the top level which was conventional I thought I tried the sounds but maybe I didn't. I only ran it once since it was conventional put it on the shelf until I did an upgrade which was yesterday but it was already upgraded. so added the sounds. headlights are not that bright so I may take it back apart and see why that is. so now I have an extra cruise commander. and I moved on to upgrading a Berkshire jr with cruise lite that upgrade was simple board fits in the engine on top of  the weight in the rear. left the light and smoke alone. need to take care of the antenna. tried having it stick out a few inches but that didn't work so probably gonna have to use the handrails.

John, think LED headlights.

did that for the sd 90 2 days ago so why not this one . not bad I paid 125 for the engine and the err board in it  was that much so total I now have under 200 in the sd40t2 LOL not to bad. John you know what I think of soldering but the Berkshire jr has handrails can I use that as a antenna? if so how do I attach the antenna to them guessing soldering ?

ok toninght I decided to clean up the tape and see if I could get the smoke and lights to work. well I'm really confused now . since lights didn't work I am guessing they were not hooked up correctly same with smoke so I pulled everything out and started fresh like it was a new install so far I have both motors wired. had a question with the lights the front plug has 2 brown wires and one black same with the rear light plug so I figure it would be tie both browns together and that would be the + side and black common - . if I am wrong please correct me . now comes the smoke unit the regulator has been cut off also . 2 black a red and a brown there is a switch for the smoke on and off so I am guessing one side of switch to red on regulator both blacks are ground Brownto the cruise commander and the red off of the other side of switch to smoke unit and black on smoke unit to ground. am I correct ?    6-28255 is the engine
