I am trying to create the look of a weedy, not maintained hillside/embankment, but I'm not happy with the way it's turning out. I'm using a variety of ground foams, dirt, paint, etc, and I intend to clutter the area with trash and maybe a broken down fence, but it's just not working for me. I don't have a static grass applicator and - candidly - this is the only area where I would need one and am rather reluctant to buy one.

I'm open to suggestions and would appreciate any ideas.

Thanks,

Jim

New to this so take it or leave it. I love the stone wall and grass and I really like your Schlitz Beer car!!

Sacrifice some trees and clip down into pieces to create small shrubs or saplings like mentioned in an above post. Don’t be afraid to leave some gravel or sandy open patches. Some growth coming out of the stone wall here and there or some greenery starting to drape over the top edge of the wall would add a look of disrepair. I’ve seen what the static grass can do and it’s cool but your probably right it’s not worth the expense if you’re only using it for this. There’s a lot of whispy “floral” stems you can pick up at Micheal’s or a hobby lobby like store that could double as tall grass and not cost an arm and a leg. Neat concept!

It doesn't look bad but I have a few ideas:

1. The green areas are short so they look like mowed grass. If they are weeds and green, they should be long.

2. I would wash the entire thing down with browns, and grays.

3. Maybe make sone rivulets, washed away, eroded areas.

4. Add some trash- tires are good, you could go big and add a washing machine or some other large rusty objects.

5. Then judiciously add some long weeds- the cheap china bristle brushes are good, but be wary of big clumps which tend to look fake.

6. Finally add small bits of tissue paper, the thin bags you put veggies in in the grocery store, and smashed bits of glass.

I would keep the ground unified in color and let the trash be the accents. Look at actual scenes and maybe drive around and take some reference photos.

Have fun!

I think it looks OK but flat. Go to Scenic Express and look up their multi-season Tuft grass. They come in different shades of green and should be mixed. Also you can get different lengths so mix it up. I would clear a lot of the green you have now and start with tuft grass. Hope this helps. You're doing just fine. Oh one other thing. Scenic Express has some good videos on youtube. Check this one out. DonUnknownimages-3images-1images

A little bit of liner vegetation added to the mix can make a difference, even if it isn't standing upright. Caraway seeds, bits of weed stalk, some unwound rope pieces, and so on make nice accents. That said, taking the time to manually place a few vertical plants (as others have suggested) may be worthwhile. Doesn't take a lot.

BTW: I agree with the others, what you have is already quite nice.
