Just wondering what the IR transmitter on the latest engines sends to the sensor tracks...or better, what would one have to send to just trigger the sensor track to play the recording? Say with a boxcar or whatever.
I believe that there is a plan afoot at Lionel to offer a sensor boxcar. This has been discussed a number of times, and we bring it up regularly. I'll be asking this again at the Legacy User Group Meeting at York.
I really doubt Lionel will issue an IR transmitter equipped car that will fit my layout scheme/era. I'm hoping the IR transmitters in these cars can be transferred to another car (like a MTH R50b, Atlas X-29 express, or Weaver B60) or better yet a tender from one of my road steamers. Because of the cost, I'm still on the fence on whether to commit to this capability or forego it.
If they put the IR transmitter in a boxcar, I can't imagine with a little creativity it couldn't be moved to a different car or tender. Of course, we'll have to wait for the actual product to arrive to know the details.
Think of the sensor tracks, it was a piece of cake to adapt them to a variety of other track systems, it happened practically overnight that all sorts of threads showed up about the capability.
I wondered what code the IR transmitted for it to be recognized to be a generic transmitter and trigger the stored recording. It can be programmed to trigger specific recordings to the particular engine, or just any engine triggering the recording. So I wondered what the minimum code would be for a generic trigger.
It has engine specific data that it dumps, that's how the LCS iPad application gets the full engine data when the engine passes over the sensor track. I'm presuming that there would be a way to load the engine data into the sensor car for use with varied engines. It'll be interesting to see if this happens and what form it takes.
The LCS has to know the specific engine # as it can run recordings based on engine number and the direction the engine passes over the sensor track as well.
