Issues with Universal Remote

I have a universal remote for the Lionel D&RG A/B/A set, 6-82300 powered FT-A, 6-82301 un-powered FT-A and 6-82305 powered FT-B.

Everything works fine EXCEPT I can not get the couplers to fire. I read the instruction, "hit the coupler button twice within one second". No matter how many times I try, the bell or horn comes on and the coupler does not open. 

Anyone else having this problem?

My remote had version 1.1, so I did an upgrade to version 1.2, no difference.

I thought with the Universal Remote you had to use a"shift" sequence to fire couplers. Hit the Shift button and then the coupler you are trying to activate. That's what I do with mine.

The double hit is for use with the remotes that come with each loco.

Doing this from memory so maybe you'll hear from others.
