Hey folks,

I happened to check out Rich's website just now, and I saw a sneak-preview "teaser" indicating a new video is planned for a mid-October release -- with the focus being "the art of 3-rail scale".  If it's already been mentioned here, then I completely missed it.    If not, I thought I'd share what I stumbled upon.  Either way, it appears we're in for another video treat soon.

Rich, if you see this thread, are you planning to sell the HD Bluray copies at York in a couple of weeks?

Hey guys, thanks!  It feels good to be done.  I hope you enjoy it.

Allan, do I need to get all my sales in before your review comes out?

Frank, good question!  I have not looked into that at all but it had crossed my mind.  I feel like the days of physical media like DVDs, Blu-rays are numbered.  When the smoke clear I'll start looking into it. Thanks.

Rich

Rich,

This video is just what the doctor ordered. Your skills on your locomotives is what I plan on heading down after college and career grabbing. As an artist, scenes on your layout that look like they stripped from real life is moving art in the palm of your hand. Definitely going to get this DVD, especially since I have a few new Lionel locomotives, like the recent Conrail SD40, I want to give this type of treatment.

Rich: I figure you'll be all sold out of the videos (both DVD and Blu-Ray) before the review even appears (in late Nov./early Dec.). At least you should be sold out because anyone wanting to improve the looks of their motive power to achieve a closer-to-prototype appearance is certainly going to want to see the techniques you use. Folks going to York next week would be well advised to stop by booth AA-8 in the Orange Hall (and our OGR booth, as well, of course).

Rich,

Loved the Blu-ray video!  I leaned a lot and seeing so much more of your layout and from all the different angles this time around was a great pleasure.  Great collection of engines and rolling stock as well.  Fantastic job on creating true scale models.

So when you starting work on video #5? LOL

Thank you all for nice comments!

I should have plenty of videos for the show.

George, I would still like to build a smaller layout, video it and then sell the video and the layout.  I would have to sell my layout first, and I'm planning on doing that.  So there it is, I said it, my layout is for sale.  Anyone interested?   I really want to build another layout and the only way is to sell mine first.  My four videos covered everything including all the construction and now the trains, so there is really nothing left to do with my layout.  Eventually, I'll probably build another large layout and I might even get to expand a little, however, that's still under negotiation with the upper management.

So Rob, there will probably be a video #5, just not on the Black Diamond.

Hi Rich,

When you say smaller layout, how small are we talking?

I picked up a Blu-Ray to add to all the other videos of yours I have, and by the way, Rich is a classy guy - I live in Canada, and the shipping cost was almost as much as the video, but Rich refunded me the difference between what it actually costs and what I paid right away!

Can't wait to get the new video. Thanks again Rich.

Your current layout is a work of art/gem. I would be interested in the smaller layout. How about 6'x12' or 8'16' or modular/free-mo? Thinking about it I don't see to many modular or free-mo besides Lionel Fas trak series.

Thanks

Max, if you mean "obsolete", then I guess I disagree somewhat.  Today's technology technology treadmill is moving far too quickly for my tastes.  And you're talking to a guy who once programmed in low-level, assembly-language computer programming decades ago.  And while I'm no longer a bits-and-bytes level computer guy these days, I do know that we're introducing new stuff into the market faster than the new stuff solves any significant problems.  The NTSC TV broadcast standard lasted DECADES, and gave us numerous TV broadcast upgrades -- including color TV from what was once only black-and-white.  Today, in a few short years, we've already obsoleted some HD/HDMI protocols built into receivers that can't pass 4K video/audio signals on products that cost over $2,500 in 2013.  So now, we're supposed to go out and buy new pre-amps and receivers to handle new 4K protocols?  And then what happens in a couple of more years???  No thank you!!!

We're introducing new media products because we can -- not because they bring any value to the consumer.  But we've trained a generation of consumers to just buy the latest wiz-bang technology just because it's new.  Same thing goes for social media communication nonsense.  Email is already considered dated.  Same thing with blogging.  Myspace is passe', and we now have a plethera of Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and Lord-knows-what-else.    How many different communication platforms do we really need?

Everybody wants video downloads now.  And what happens when the device those downloads are stored on goes belly up?  And folks don't have back-up versions of the media?  Or they have those back-ups on devices that can't be read 10 years from now?

Call me a dinosaur, but I'm happy to see Rich distribute his latest video on DVD and definitely Blu-ray.  I suppose some would have liked it on 4K Ultra HD, but that's just a niche market right now.  I figure since I have 4K and blu-ray players around our house right now, I should be all set to enjoy Rich's videos for years to come.  I like to keep things simple these days.  That's about all my brain can handle right now.

Max there is information provided by Rich on weathering with, chalks, paints, dyes and other methods on his 2nd or 3rd DVD

I'm replying to David's SOAPBOX ON/OFF. I totally agree, and IMO what David says is very well stated.

If we're going strictly by the quote DVDs are obsolete. DVDs are 480P (720x480) resolution.   Blu-Ray is 1080P (1920x1080).  DVDs on an HD flat panel (or computer monitor) just don't cut it.

I'm glad it's available on Blu-Rya as I rip it to my computer and then I have the best of both worlds.

Time marches on folks.  It waits for no man.

Another old-time assembler programmer (who tries to stay current.)

Chris, nice to hear from another former assembly language programmer!!!

Since Rich is also making the video available on Blu-ray, I took Max's comment to imply he REALLY wanted the video as a download rather than ANY format of physical media.  I'm planning to get the blu-ray, but it'll be interesting to see how well the 4K upscaling algorithm of my 4K player will perform.  Even folks who purchase the DVD version should see "decent" HD viewing if they ever purchase a new blu-ray or 4K player down the road that upscales DVD content.  (I know, it's never quite the same as native 4K content, but it should be very acceptable to all but the most discerning eyes.)

I dont disagree with you, but some of us..like myself, are purely digital folks.  Because I travel with work A LOT, dvd's and blurays don't work for me.  So unfortunately, sadly I won't be ordering his material because I rely solely on my MacBook to watch videos.

As far as backup & storage goes...the various backup clouds work extremely well and are very reliable...e.g; iCloud , google cloud and hundreds of other clouds.  The company I work for even uses cloud services for storage and come to think of it, we dont even produce any material on dvd/cd-rom anymore.   Everything is downloadable!   So if he releases downloadable version, ill be all over it in a heartbeat!
