Team Track Tuesday: Slugfest

Before you can understand what's happening at the Everett Team Track, you’ll need to understand what's been happening up the line in Packsaddle (Pinery) Narrows.

Shortly after Valley Energy began experimenting with its new plasma energy generator, locals started reporting all manner of oddities. Strange sounds, unusual smells, and odd creatures to name a few.  But, until last week, the rest of the Valley dismissed the reports as nonsense from a bunch of backwood bumpkins.

What changed? Well, some of that backwood's nonsense managed to escape the Narrows. It came by way of a rickety old freight car on its way to the scrap yard. A brief stop in Everett was just long enough for a few unusually slimy stowaways to ooze into the lives of the upstanding citizens of Everett.

Some in Everett tried to ignore the problem.

Others tried to intimidate the problem with fancy credentials and big words.

Law enforcement tried to strong arm the beasts.

A few kind folks even tried to domesticate the creatures.

Over the weekend, the level of engagement escalated. Men from Jaite, fearing the slugs could soon make their way across the river, came to Everett with plans to hack up the gooey invertebrates.

Unfortunately, nothing seemed to work.

That brings us to Team Track Tuesday. In a last-ditch effort to save their town from the slimy slugs, Everett trustees ordered two emergency carloads of Salt from the Morton mines in Rittman.

And here, at the team track, our long story meets a quick, sizzling and rather disgusting end. Using the sounds of sticks beating against galvanized garbage can lids as a distraction, residents heaved piles of premium salt at the critters, thus ending slugfest 2017.

As for the strange happenings up in Packsaddle Narrows, we’ll just have to save that for another day.

Thomas, That must be some serious power generated by Valley power! I had no idea giant slugs could be defeated so easily. The info links are really cool.

Well, people in this neck of the wood really enjoy their Heinz products. With the Heinz factory a few short miles away in Pittsburgh, the locals are always assured of getting their ketchup and relish fresh...

These fellows have been unloading this boxcar for years! I often wonder if they will ever finish the job. Pictures taken along the Pine Valley Railroad.

So here on the RSJ&B while the help wanted ad has still gone unanswered -some temps have been hired from a galaxy far far away to lend a hand. 

Hopefully some "locals" will respond to the ad soon.

SIRT - Beautifully done!!  What a great job of story telling with your photos!  I love the Santa Fe high cube boxcar - very nice weathering job!  I also appreciate your camera angles looking through the SF car, whose doors are open, and seeing the other boxcars on the adjacent track.  Your last photo show the 3 boxcars on the same track ready to be pulled from the team track.  BRAVO!!!

Btw - are those Whirlpool dishwashers or AC units or both??

MarK Dif - Nice billboard reffer!!  Most colorful!!  Heinz 57 says it all!  

Yes Zeke bought Haney's tractors at the going out of business sale.  Zeke claims he got a great deal too!    I bought this open end door automobile boxcar and the tractors ( Ertle) with this edition of TTT in mind.  I'm sure this boxcar will return with more large rubber tire goodies in future editions of TTT.  

Thomas - your imagination is amazing!  Are you any relation to Rod Serling of the Twilight Zone?  You really know how to turn "things" inside out  Sorry could not resist that one.  Thanks for the humor and making me LOL!

Rich - 30,000 bananas!!! Whew!!  Thats "a peeling" .... OK that was pretty bad I'll admit.  I do agree with Tom's comment on this one

Chug - wonderful and convincing scene!! Love the choice of boxcar .... an outside braced N&W.  The truck is also great too!  I've got to find one like that..... York's a comin!  Those guys are really that slow?  Perhaps they need a vitamin B shot and some Red Bull

RJJB18 - Those folks from the other galaxy are pretty interesting looking folks!  With help like that who needs the locals anyway.

Include me in on looking forward to Thomas' adventures.  The landmarks in his stories are nominally within a few miles of my house.  

A real life story about the CT&V (now the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway) that runs thru the National Park.  About 50+ years ago my father took us for a Sunday drive along Riverview Road to Akron which follows the tracks.  There was an ore train with three GP7 up front but it had pushers.  An AB set of B&O sharks.  What a sight.  I finally got a set of these (Weaver) last year.

What an experience that must have been to see those B&O sharks.  Freight trains in the Valley is something I wish I could have seen. That and watching trains pass Akron's JO tower.

Looking at what little remains today, it's difficult to imagine there was once a massive rail network in the Akron area.

By the way, we're practically neighbors! I live just about a mile from the National Park on the south west side.

It is a shame that Akron U wanted the JO Tower property so badly and then tore it down and planted grass.

Akron had quite a rail network at one time.  Actually so did Cleveland.  Please refer to railsandtrails.com for maps of this area.
