Joe McDoakes-- "So You Want a Model Railroad" video

I can check the title when I get home.  I have that tape.

It also had the marionette story that I think was titled "The Wonderful World of Trains".  (or at least I have mental images of the charactetrs repeating that quite a bit, that might not be the actual title for the marionette thing)

Allan, I have that VHS tape. It's titled "toy Trains in action" and has an orange cover on the case. The first video on the tape is joe McDoakes in "So you want a model railroad". A real funny film. The video with the puppets is "The wonderful world of trains".

I still laugh at that video years later-as he says "a round of Track for the boys" in the hobby shop and the guys at the counter tip their hats, its surely a video classic of a time gone by.

Thanks, Pat!  That's the VHS I have (orange jacket; same title).  I'll take it to the office tomorrow and run it there.  Just wanted to make sure I had the right one.

Alan, I have it on a VHS tape called " For Train Freaks Only" I almost named my railroad the "On Time ,On Track & Over Budget Railroad"in honor of this fine film! 

Last month a forumite posted a link to a video of "So You Want to Build a Model Railroad" with "Joe McDoakes" (1955). I watched all 10 minutes, thought it was hilarious, but the video was pulled off YouTube after a few hours.

Interesting trivia: Arthur Q. Bryan, the voice of Elmer Fudd, plays the radio personality in that episode.  

Yes, it was that thread (and the subsequent pulling off YouTube, probably initiated by Warner Bros.) that sparked my quest for that particular McDoakes segment.  I was sure I had it on one of the many older toy train videos I have accumulated over the years, so now I'll take the VHS to the office tomorrow and burn it to DVD.

Hurry and you might get to see the Joe McDoakes, So You Want A Model Railroad before it is pulled off YouTube again.

I believe that same video also had a silent film on it with a Boy scout troop playing outside with Ives standard gauge trains. These kids were the original garden railroaders. I know longer have the tape but wish I had a cd of it to show current scouts.

I never saw this, if I showed this to my wife she might crown me. LOL

My wife says Joe's a piker compared two some of us here at OGR. Some of us buy bigger houses for larger families some for bigger train collections

I had my VHS version of "Toy Trains in Action" converted to DVD, and now enjoy viewing this program from time to time.  It clearly demonstrates that even though the hobby has changed over all these years, the hobbyists have not.

Did you notice the 'can I wire transformers in parallel' at the end?!?!? Had to laugh!!

Yes, and thanks, Mark, but I already have it on DVD.  I enjoy viewing it on my flat screen TV from time to time.  Always good for a chuckle and for confirming that we hobbyists haven't changed much over time.

Good to see this video has a long life. Its funny, part exaggeration, yet insightful and fun.

I have many toy trains scale train DVDs. I don't have this one. I didn't see it in the TM catalog. Anyone know where I can buy one?
