John J. Scala (aka The Weekend Chief) passed away on Tuesday November 12.  He authored several railroad books, and produced various railroad calenders for many years.  Below is the obituary written by his daughter Lauren:

Subject: John Scala - WNBC traffic reporter Lauren Scala

Yesterday afternoon I lost my father. For the past 373 days, I have woke up every morning with a pit in the depths of my stomach dreading this moment. It was exactly that many days ago that I stood in front of a team of neurosurgeons at Stony Brook Hospital as they diagnosed my 64 yr old Dad with glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive terminal brain cancer. Today I held his hand for the last time just hours after receiving the call that he had passed rather suddenly.

I could tell you how awful it all was, how exhausting, how difficult it was to hide the pain and to put a smile on my face everyday when all I wanted to do was hide... but all of that is NOTHING compared to what I had watch him endure for this disease that there is no cure for. I will focus on the wonderful memories and on the positive lessons I learned from him and from this experience because life makes us no promises.

My Dad, John Scala, was funny, adventurous, creative, and he gave the best advice. He was a man that was never afraid to cry and he gave me more hugs in my 31 years than some people get in double that amount of time. He once said that the only reason he went through with treatment was because he made a vow to be my father and he needed to be here for me and my brother. He will ALWAYS be my hero and words cannot describe just how much I am going to miss him.

He was a good friend, and I know that all of us who got to know him will miss him very much.

John Scala was the person who helped me years ago when I started the all-color Jersey Central yearly calendar (along with the PRR and C&NW calendar versions) during the 1980s. Later, some of my LIRR photos were used in his LIRR book and also, I think, his BUDD RDC color book.

In RMT, I remembered John by referencing his... The Weekend Chief Publ. Co. ...on the RMT LIRR boxcars.

Take care John.

What wonderful words and beautiful thoughts brought forth by Johns loving daughter Lauren. My deepest condolences you. May God bless you Lauren and comfort you at this time of loss.

I always enjoyed the calenders he produced, always had at least one at home or at work. He will be missed. Rest in Peace John.

Sincerely

Oh dear. The kind of news we all hate to hear. John and I did a lot of eMailing about our mutual interests including train slides, eBay auctions, and his book publishing. I am especially fond of his book of Howard Fogg paintings (“The ALCO Image” as I recall its title off the top of my head) We met many years ago when I still lived back East. I wondered why I hadn't received a reply from him in awhile. In fact I just listed his LIRR book on eBay!

John, I hope you are enjoying your train ride to Paradise... and when you get there, say hi to Howard for me.

My sincerest condolences to his family.

A lovely and a true heartfelt tribute to her dad by Lauren.  John was a good friend over many many years and I forever will be thankful that I got to know him ----he was one of those people who enters into your life and you are grateful he did.  He was and always will be "The Weekend Chief".  As I always referred to him as "Brother John" --I will miss you my friend.
