I don't have the Allegheny, but all my other K-Lines have either 4 or 6 #6-32 screws that undo from the underside of the frame plate.

I expect yours is pretty similar.

Sometimes you have to study the front a bit to see which screw or screws to undo.

About the worst thing that can happen is something that you did not intend to take off becomes loose. No big deal.

Hi Al.  We have a RK model but its not here in front of me. They are all somewhat similar. You should find several screws at each end when resting on its back. Remove just two or three and then one at a time checking for when the shell releases. You don't want to remove more than necessary.

When it is released, carefully turn the locomotive back onto its wheels and lift the shell to one side keeping it parallel to the chassis. Be careful for wires that are connected. If you can place a towel or foam cradle alongside to place the shell on, you may be able to leave the wires connected.

Now you can service the smoke unit as needed.

It sounds like power is not getting to your smoke unit.

With it powered up, maybe try measuring for AC power at the point where the wiring harness connects to the board.

In command mode it should be around 10 VAC.

If not present, try testing back through the wiring to the on/off switch, then back to the connection at the mother board.

Perhaps the on/off switch has failed?

Rod:

Thanks for your kind offer but my Allegheny has cruise control.

In my final check before reassembly, I accidently shorted the hot side of the smoke resistor to ground. I had to reprogram the loco again. It smokes profusely but does not smoke in puffs synchonized to the chuffs. It has been so long since it smoked, I have forgotten if it was ever a puffer.

The K-Line manual gives no clue.

Al;

Lucky you did not cook the smoke unit triac on the L2RC board I guess.

Someone who has the Allegheny will hopefully chime in as to whether it chuffs or not, but my guess is that it should, especially since it is fan driven.

raildog;

As far as I know the cruise kit is only good for the Allegheny, since it includes a replacement motor with the speed sensing cage. The motor has the engine specific worm gear and mount bracket. Sorry about that.
