Yesterday (Saturday, November 25, 2018) I attended the 61st Annual Appalachian Model Railroad Show & Sale in Huntington, WVa.

There I visited with a vendor that had a K-Line brand H8 Allegheny for $350.
It was in the box, in plastic and only had been test ran.
I was very, very tempted.

However...here is why I had to walk away...or maybe I shouldn't have?
1. My small layout uses 027 curves and the tightest this H8 would run on is 031.
This was a very large locomotive and while I have no reason to not believe the seller, my guess is that it would be happier on larger diameter curves.

2. I was comparing this H8 to a MTH K4 Kanawha that was on the table next to the Allegheny....and there was something odd.
The K4 appeared to be to be larger than the H8.
The Allegheny's cab seemed to be scaled down along with other appliances when compared to the Kanawha.
Is this K-Line Allegheny not to scale?  Smaller?

3. I thought K-Line was out of business or absorbed by someone else.
Did K-Line make a product?
Did I pass on a good deal?

The K-Line H-8 was built to 1:58 scale (I believe it says so on the box), and is a generally nice scale O-gauge locomotive - but it is not O-scale, even though it is O-gauge, I have one with TMCC/Cruise and it has been a very nice piece. There are some visual compromises (the firebox "skirt" is too short, as I recall) to make it run on tight radii.

I like mine. I have 072 curves, but I saw one at a train show years ago when K-Line was still in business, and the loco looked nice and the price was very friendly. So I got it. Unlike many RailKing and other "traditional" equipment, the K-Line Allegheny is not compressed - it's scaled down.

K-line also offered some presentable 1:58 scale Hudsons (ATSF prototype, as well as NYC, as I recall), Pacifics and Mikes back in the day. The Pacifics are now offered by Williams by Bachman, but I think the K-Line die-cast tender has been replaced by a plastic one.

Hi Bryan---thisi is what I know. Yes, that is a K-Line loco produced 2005/6?  I believe because I  bought one. Its more scaled to S-gauge but I didn't mind that cause I'm not a scale guy. It would have a very tough run on 027-probably would not stay on the rails. It was a nice runner but when it slowed up/down it came to an abrupt halt! Like almost derailed well not the loco but a few of the cars would. What's supprising is the value holding up. Personally I believe passing it up was okay. K-Line also produced a Big Boy prior to the H8---same issues. They both are very good looking thou

I have the K-Line Allegheny, bought it for $60 with the locomotive electronics stripped.  Since the tender still had the full RailSounds package, I just dropped the ERR Cruise Commander and fan driven smoke in it.  It's 25" long, and while it will do O31 curves comfortably, it does look somewhat out of place on that small a curve.
