K-line StarliteDiner light in sign

FWIW, Brasseur’s Trains shows a replacement sign in stock under part number K42404-X001 at a cost of $12.00 (plus shipping). I have not had to try getting into the assembly on mine but I expect that it has small incandescent GOW bulbs inside wired in series. This structure had a slightly complicated wiring setup and was sensitive - especially the sound board - to voltage above 12/14. 

Having a letter unlit would be prototypical

Here is a picture of the sign. They are gow bulbs wired in parallel. The sign pops apart with a utility knife. I run all my buildings on 12vdc from a computer power supply, so I expect a long bulb life. A new bulb could be soldered in quite easily.

Thanks for all of the helpful responses.   I now have to decide between opening and replacing a bulb, ordering a new sign, or leaving it “prototypical”.

As it happens, mine had a light out when I opened it up. I pushed on the solder at the bulb wire and it has worked ever since. I did it all right on the layout. The sign pops out of the roof, and the two halves are not glued together, so a sharp knife will separate them. Go for it.         

Thanks John, I was worried that if I went that route, I would find the 2 halves glued together and difficult to separate. I think I’ll give it a try.

Should have guessed it was parallel wiring and that the sign will pop apart. Hard choice for the OP what to do next but I’d open it up and test whether any bulbs need replacing and which ones they are.

I assume that the sound system as well as the lighting will run on DC - I have never tried that.
