I have a couple of K-Line cars and had mounted those #$!*@&@ Atlas couplers on them.  Things WERE working fine, but this morning one of the knuckles decided to just fall off

I put 2 new Kadee 804 couplers on the car, now the couplers rub against the PSC diaphragms.

Has anyone tried the 1/4" longer shaft 746 couplers?  Has Kadee said anything about making long shank couplers that are under set or over set?  A longer, under set coupler would help with the length and height issues I have on this (and 2 other K-Line) passenger cars.

I could remove the diaphragms and position them higher, but that still would leave me with a short shank.  With 2 cars coupled so close together, the striker plates catch on 072 curves.  I wonder if I can heat the striker plates and bend them, giving them a round shape on the front surface so they would not catch?

I think the PSC diaphragms are a touch thicker than the original K-Line parts and that's why 2 Kadee 804s together make them too close.  I'm thinking that an 804 on one end and the new 746 on the other end would be just the thing.  The Atlas coupler was about 1/4" longer than the 804 so it should work.  The trip pin on the Atlas coupler simply fell out.

I always run my cars with the vestibule towards the rear, I read Seaboard did this on their trains (although I have seen a photo that indicates they did not always do it), so as long as I put the same coupler on the vestibule ends it'll be easy to keep from mismatching them.
