On my scale-length cars I mount the couplers in swing arms made from square brass tube. The swing arm is swiveled at a point as far back from the car end as possible without interfering with truck swing. Length of the tube from the pivot point is determined such that cardiaphragms just touch on O-72 curves. Proper height is made using styrene pads and shims.

This arrangement is not self-centering. If I ever decide to do switching with my passenger stock I'll need to come up with a coupler centering arrangement similar to the method used by John Armstrong.
