I went to a local auction the other day and bought postwar trains so cheap you wouldn't believe. In my purchases I bought a KW transformer. I checked it out, cord good enough to be plugged in. It hummed, so of course I new it worked. I hooked my multi-meter to it, it read 19 volts output ( a ) side, (B ) side read the same; 6,14,20 constant were good. Test light glowed bright. I took out a loco and hooked up my test leads to it, loco ran fine. I was working the controls and it stopped working, it was still humming, but no out put. I shut it down, unplugged it, and opened it up. The rollers are intact and working , replacement is needed though. The rectifier disc ;not sure about either. The overlaod switch : I looked at the contact points on it they were burt, so I took a file and filed then off a bit. So I put it back together, It still has no out put when I test it. As you turn up the power the overload light comes on; It gets brighter as you move the throttle high; but wont run a loco now. Any ideas out there? Oh yeah I just replaced the cord and still same problem. It worked fine when I first got and with in a few minutes of plugging it in it quit working.
