i am looking for some help in finding ladders for my signal construction project.  I have only been successful in locating plastruct ladders( which are very thick) and brass ladders for locomotives.  I need them to be tall enough to reach a cantilever signal.  The company peco seems to have a possible fit, but cannot locate a local distributor.  A link to my project is below.  Any help would be great.

thanks

mike

I see you are in Shawnee, KS, try Fred's Train Shop in Overland Park. He carries some Peco stuff. What he doesn't have he can order. It also seems like I have seen some ladders there, not sure the brand though, hanging on the west wall where the O gauge items are. He doesn't have a big website, but contact info is on website. I'm not far from you, in west Lenexa.

Mike not sure  how handy you are but they are easily fabricated with a jig and brass wire, just solder them  to any length required.  if you are doing a lot of them you will benefit from the economy of scale in terms of time and material costs .  Besides brass is the way to go stronger and easily manipulated if you need to bend it etc.  Just my .02.  Jon

I've used 1/4" inch wire mesh screening with what I think are good results.

I don't have a very clear picture but the ladder on my signal bridge is 1/4 inch mesh screening cut, filed and painted silver.

Real easy to do and a small piece of screening makes lots of ladders.

Any good hardware store should carry it.

       Give it a shot.

RTR12,

You are very close to me, I am just west of k7.  Maybe we should try to catch up sometime.

Dan,

Your idea on the mesh screen is awesome!  I picked some up tonight, and the way it is manufactured, some rows are tighter and others wider making it work even better.  While not a perfect match for the atlas ones, I am really happy with it.  The bonus is I was able to solder brass to it .  Thanks so much for the suggestion.

Btw, your signal bridges look very nice.

thanks,

I could live with that, even though they are a bit wide, and the rung spacing is a little too close. The cost and simplicity more than make up for those minor details. I might even have a roll of that out in the garage. It still needs hand made platforms and hand rails, but that's not as bad as hand making all those rungs.
