Just picked this up at the PO: 
My first "house" car in SG. Now on to the questions.
Here is one side of the box; lookit how happy those (very young) kids are! 
Here's the other side, along with the larger corrugated box a #215 came in:

Would this larger box have been the one used by Lionel as the "shipping" box, with the smaller box riding inside? Also, can we date an item by the type /style of box it came in?

My guess is the size difference has more to do with the series difference than anything else. The 200-series cars are the largest SG freight cars lionel made.....substantially bigger than the 500-series.
