I am rehabbing my gameroom layout that will accommodate O and Std gauge trains and a loop for my MTH monorail.  The layout size is fixed to an 8 x 12 ft size and is trimmed with oak and stained to match my gameroom paneling, doors, and trim.

For the base level, I will run O around the perimeter with O-72 curves.  Inside that I was going to run two loops of STD-57 which I purchased recently from USA Track.  There will be a second level of 6 x 8 ft running the width of the layout (leaving to 3 x 8 ft portions of the main level, one on each side) that will have the monorail loop, another Std-42 loop, and an O-gauge loop.

My questions are as follows: 1) Will the STD-57 loop that each partially run under the upper level be a big headache as far as getting to potential derailed trains under the upper level?  Second, is there a recommended height for a second level?  I have used 10 inches in the past  but could go a bit higher if it would make it easier to retrieve trains that may be stuck under the first level.

I could delete one loop of STD track on the main level and then keep it close to the edge of the platform, but I'd really like to have that third loop.

Thank you in advance,

Tim

The base level is at 30 in from the floor, which allows the layout from the seating area in the other part of the gameroom.  The scenery consists of the walls/support for the second level which are made from Styrofoam carved with a soldering iron to make a "stone wall" and painted with acrylic craft paint.  I dry brush white as a final touch to give a winter time feel.  Other than that, I use a combination of wood-carved and bottle brush trees and a mirror for a frozen pond.  Structures are a mix of tinplate/prewar buildings and bridges and Department 56 buildings.  The town will be  populated with a mix of Barclay and Department 56 figures.  I have a ton of prewar lights and light towers, which I run at a reduced voltage to extend lamp time, but mostly to give the whole scene a warm glow.

Many evenings, I will just light up the accessories and buildings and take in the scenery.  My goal is to display some of my rains in a toy-like scene from the past.

Thanks again,

Tim
