How do you get an automatic update on the lame iPad? I have it enabled, but it's still at the old rev. Do I have to go search for it again and update?
How do you get an automatic update on the lame iPad? ...
Now, now, John. You've gotta first ask nicely.
I'm far from an expert on this stuff. But with my iPad, I check the App Store icon whenever it indicates new updates are available. Then I perform the update if it's something I'm interested in updating. Call me old school, but I'm totally averse to having automatic updates on ANYTHING.
Now don't ask me anything about Android devices, 'cause that stuff isn't even on my radar screen!!!
David
I do the same as David. Look for the little update number under the App Store icon and fetch it.
Please be more specific. There is no update option of any kind when I open the application store, but there are two applications that have possible updates, one being the LCS. I see no way of updating it, and I'm not exactly a computer neophyte!
FWIW, I see all sorts of people on a google search with the same issue with IOS8. If this is the fabled Apple Experience, you can keep it!
Go to the App Store. At the bottom of the screen it says updates. It wil show all the Apps that need updating or have been updated. It will list them by date. On the far right hand side next to each app it will say update or open. I press update and it does. If it was already updated it will say open.
Well, no it actually doesn't say that, that's the primary issue!
I've actually deleted a bunch of applications, did several total power-down cycles, turned off WiFi and powered down, then powered up and waited and turned WiFi on, etc. All of these were suggestions on various thread on the Apple Community, none worked.
Here's what I see when I go to the page in question. An update button would be a really keen addition, and I'd probably be able to update if there was one.

I just realized, after the last round of restarting and deleting applications, it must have updated, because before it had them listed as updates pending, but with no way to update them!
This is a known bug in IOS8 apparently.
According to the version number and the date, you are already upgraded. If not the "open" button would say "update".
My point is that previous to my deleting, rebooting, etc. it had the old version and no update button. I didn't notice that it updated behind the scenes when I was trying to beat it into submission.
John,
On the iPad, tap: Settings/iTunes & App Store and turn on automatic downloads
That's for iOS 8.x. Earlier iOS 7.x may vary.
This and a whole lot more is available in the iOS 8 User Guide for iPad.
Ok. Mine did. It should have been as I described. It only showed up about 6 pm as an upgrade although a friend had it this morning.
Its a shame that it wasn't as easy as mine but I honestly never had an issue upgrading apps.
John,
This and a whole ot more is available in the iOS 8 User Guide for iPad.
Anyone just try to add a photo of their engine into the roster page? I tried both iPads with the new update and it just exits the whole LCS app. Sounds like the fix added some bugs. Plus the halt button still does not work.
Anyone else notice this? Both iPads are using the newest iOS 8.0.2
The Internet is full of stories about IOS 8.0.2 and not being able to upgrade. There are some very odd workarounds, I finally got an upgrade after rebooting it a couple of times, turning WiFi on and off, etc. Some people got it working by deleting certain applications. Certainly not the fabled Apple Experience we keep talking about.

Barry, I had that on, but I turned it off and rebooted hoping I could do the manual update. If you search on the issue, lots of people having the same problem with IOS 8.
John,
I could offer seminars on Apple's current issues. I have 2 open cases at present, both of which have been escalated to Engineering. I've returned two successive iPhone 6's and have gone back to my 5s.
Regardless, one thing that does work properly is automatic updating. My LCS app updated itself automatically yesterday.
You need to understand that iOS updates apps automatically according to an algorithm that looks sat how many need updating and how long they've been waiting. Often, there may be a day or less delay from availability to actual download.
When the whole fiasco started, automatic updates were on. When Marty posted his update notice, I went and checked, and two apps were waiting to be updated. That's when the raindance started to try to get them to update. I found countless other people on the Apple site as well as other sites with the same issues. Various "solutions" were offered, and I tried a few of them. Toward the end of my rope, one of the "solutions" apparently worked, because I finally got them updated. This is a new iPad, 4th generation, very little done to it except the IOS update to 8.0.2
From all I read, the whole IOS 8 release cycle has been one screwup after another, I'll bet they're missing Steve Jobs now over there at Apple. This doesn't appear to be the typical smooth update rollout they all sing about.

And Microsoft updates work so great. LOL.
Well, I've had Windows 7 automatically upgrading for years, and it's never caused any issues. AAMOF, Windows 7 has been pretty bulletproof for me.

I've see the add from camera crash a couple times in different apps. looks like they did change something in IOS 8 that the apps are not up to date with yet

A final chapter. I went into LCS and ran it, and it was still the old version. So, I went back to the app store and there were two updates, the ones I showed you, but now they said UPDATE instead of open.
The previous screen I posted was still not right, as it should have been saying update at that point. After sleeping all night, it finally got around to letting me update them. I updated and now they're actually updated.
Like I said, pretty lame behavior...
On Lionel LCS App 3.0.1 there is a new switch in settings called Enable Button Press Sounds. With this turned on, it works just like before. With this turned OFF, the only sounds the app will generate are those from the accessory control panels. This addresses the goal to use a Bluetooth speaker under your layout so that the accessory sounds are better localized to the layout-and the user interface clicks are all suppressed.
You get to these settings through the main Settings app, not through the LCS App.
That's pretty cool Rudy, I like the idea of a larger speaker (or two).
John,
You're aware that if you tap the UPDATE button on an app that's waiting to update in the App Store app, it will immediately begin to download, correct?

I was able to take a picture then save it prior to opening the LCS app and then looking for the saved file to attach. My point is that it was much easier to take the picture inside the app.

Barry, the whole issue was that the applications waiting did NOT have an UPDATE button, but rather an OPEN button. They were in the section labeled Updates Available, just wouldn't update. When I pressed the OPEN button, it did indeed open the old version. Finally this morning when I looked again, the UPDATE button was there and they did update.

I seen"ganged" switches now operate together even when off line!
Nice!
So, why is iCab $50 and the LCS app free? Does iCab do more? If I already have an ipad, why would I bother with iCab?
Honesty $50 for any iphone app is absurd. Did they even look at the app market?
Bob
The LCS app is a very incomplete app, it still needs a lot of work. The LCS app is for layout automation, it doesn't come close to replacing the remote. Probably most people will use the LCS system for layout automation.
The iCab app looks to be a complete replacement for the Legacy hand held. It also looks to be feature complete. Since the only Apple device I have is an iPad I will not be spending for the iCab app. It all depends on the size of your layout and how many people will be operating at the same time. Visitors will not download the iCab remote. YMMV
I would pay for a feature complete LCS app for layout control and have the iCab app free or low cost. This appears to be the way MTH/Dave Hikel are going.
Looking forward to see what 3rd party apps will be available.
Dan
Thanks, Dan, for clarifying the difference.
Lionel would have been better off making the iCab app low cost or free in order to encourage entry into LCS, then make their profit in sales of the Wi-Fi adaptor, sensor tracks, etc. How cool would it be to have a non-train enthusiast visitor download the app to his phone and then control a locomotive! Great way to get new people in the hobby.
Bob
Well the 8.1 ios software update did not fix the camera crashing the LCS app.
