Would love to see the NYC version. The B&A version looks to be identical to the K-Line model. The catalog depiction of the NYC version looks to be painted differently than the K-Line NYC model. Can anyone post a photo or video?

Heres a photo of 1297 in service on the NYC.

Thanks!

Skip - Interestingly neither the 2019 Volume 2 printed catalog nor the Lionel website description for this particular engine mention the 'rear' marker lights, the website catalog description for the NYC version (2031020) only refers to the "Illuminated classification lights on the front of the locomotive."

Consequently you and Keystone raise an interesting point because the rear marker lights are clearly lit up on the B&A version shown in Michael's video.

Interesting!

Interesting!

Catalog descriptions are notorious for being inaccurate The catalog also says " 3 speaker sound system, dual speakers in the tender and one in the boiler". LOL

I would be inclined to think theres a loose connection or something in Jeffs tender. Possibly something was jarred during shipping or missed at the factory.

There are videos of the NH version showing operating rear markers as well.

I would like to know if anyone has any ideas on whether the new releases from LIONEL and their 4-6-0s with whistle steam will provide the kind of effects as in this video of a 4-6-6T? I know my Lionel U.P. 9000 doesn't produce much "steam" at all...very hard to see it. Would like to buy one of the new releases in the 4-6-0 category  especially if it has improved the "steam" effects!! Thanks for your upcoming posts!!

Jeff,

Many of my older Legacy steam engines produce good amounts of smoke, my B6, H10, K4 (original tender) all smoke great. My friend Kevin's UP 9001 produces great smoke whenever he runs it. You may not be putting enough smoke fluid in. Try 30-40 drops, search posts for correct amounts of fluid. Their may be a issue with your engine contact Alex M or GRJ they both can rework Lionel smoke units to high output. Good luck

Now that I have my New York Central 4-6-6T in good working order (after a DOA and a trip to Lionel for repair), I started researching the fate of the 4-6-6Ts after the switch to diesel power on the B&A in 1950.

All that the Staufer & May says is that " the newer 4-6-6Ts were moved over to the New York Central, renumbered 1295-1299, where they saw limited service. It was merely a case of running off their remaining miles for all were gone by 1952."

I have tried to research whet they did. It does not look like they were used on the Putman Division. Pre-diesel motive power was 4-6-0 Ten Wheelers. The Harlem and Hudson Divisions had been electrified.....

It looks like Pacifics handled steam north of the electrified zone of the Harlem Division.

Does anyone have any info or and idea of where else to look?

I will query the New York Central Railroad Historical Society of which I am a member.....

Since this is my railroad.....I have decided that in my world they were assigned to the Putnam Division and the non-electrified territory on the Harlem Division.

In response to Peter's comment, I have consulted numerous references on the Boston & Albany and New York Central Railroads, and the Hudson, Harlem and Putnam Divisions, and haven't found any photographs or information on these engines after they were transferred to the New York City area. "Steam Locomotives of the New York Central Lines" by William D. Edson and H.L. Vail Jr., published by the New York Central System Historical Society, Inc. (March 1997) lists the five D-1a engines as having been renumbered to 1295 - 1299 in March 1951 and their disposition as "SS" (sold for scrap?) between August 1951 and March 1952.

There is adequate documentation and photography of these engines during the time they were in use around Boston between 1928 and 1951.

FWIW - For anyone who may be interested (because Lionel based their latest Tank engine on the earlier K-Line Dies) I note that Western Depot has a K-Line TMCC-equipped Boston & Albany 4-6-6T engine (K3470-0403) listed on their website for $570 - if it's still available.

Actually, it says there are  27 B&A, as well as 2 weathered B&A,  along with 12 Jersey Central, and 16 Reading.

These are great scale versions but remember, they also were the engines that had that quirky jerking motion due to the electronics and required installation of a resistor (or something to that effect) to resolve that issue. There are a couple of old posts about it. I have the NYC, bought it from a dealer at York and the dealer installed it into every new engine he had for sale. Mine does not jerk and the smoke output is fantastic.

Are these 4 chuffs per rev or two Mike? Or is it  selectable for that matter?  Youtube videos give conflicting evidence.

To tell you the truth, I'm really bad at hearing the chuffs/revolution but I think the K-line version (the one I was referring to) is two, but I will listen to it closely and get back to you. If it's selectable, I've missed it completely, but I doubt it.

The K-Line engine has 4 chuffs. Not sure if its selectable. The early ones required a diode in the circuit at the input to the R2LC pin 17 chuff in to isolate it from the smoke fan. When the fix was discovered dealers were supposed to install the diode before selling the engine.

Pete

Thanks Pete, when I purchased mine at York, the dealer had installed the diode.
