is the legacy base unit available for purchase? mine died but the handheld is fine. wouldn't mind having a 2nd handheld but don't want to spend $350 on it.

Nope, you can buy the #993 charger with another remote, but the command base is not a separate sale item.
FWIW, it seems Lionel has a silent warranty on the Legacy units to keep them running trains. You won’t buy if you can’t run your engines. It would be worth a phone call to Lionel to get an RA to repair your base. Worth a try anyway. Seems to take a month or so turn around.
That was one thing I liked about the Legacy system that if something went wrong all you had to do was send it to Lionel and they would fix it. I thought at no charge might have to pay shipping I don’t know
Give them a call and get an RMA. As others have said this may well be part of the “silent warranty”, assuming no physical abuse. They may even give you a shipping label. Let us know what happens.
I had one that quit transmitting. After a call they sent me a shipping label and a return number.
