I recently purchased two ZW-Ls and was in the process of hooking them up to the Legacy command base and I have a few questions as previously I was getting the the "Lionel" on the ZW-Ls flickering and the engines flickering.  You guys helped me solve that problem but now I want to make sure I have it set up properly and have a few questions:

  1. Do I need to connect a ground to both ZW-Ls if they are running in the command mode?  I have them both connected now to the Legacy base station
  2. Do I need to use the TMCC base if I want to use the TMCC cab-1 controllers?
  3. If yes I do, how / where do I connect that? Previously the way it was hooked up was causing the flickering.

Thanks much in advance for the help.

John

Not sure what you are calling ground. They both have to be connected to the outside rails of the layout and one of them can have the wire from the Legacy base connected to the U terminal.

The TMCC base must be powered up and connected to the Legacy base with the Y connector cable supplied with the Legacy base. You do not connect the U terminal of the TMCC base to anything.

The CAB1 transmits to the TMCC base at 27 MHz. The Y connection cable transfers the data to the Legacy base. And the Legacy base puts the data on the outside rails thru it's U connector.

CJack,

You were kind enough to respond on the blinking issue.  I have that cable and also then have the MTH cable that I thought I had to also connect to the base.  TIU to Legacy base.

How would you set it up?  Very open to suggestions here as I want to get it right.  I really don't need to run my lionel engines on a MTH remote.  I have both Legacy wi-fi, and the DCS wi-fi and working thru that as well.  The thought of running engines on my iPad = cool, MTH or Lionel.  The need to use the old TMCC remotes not a must have.

I only run the Legacy base and have no MTH. I defer to these guys...

They have some answers. I wonder about connecting dcs to the Legacy base and also being able to connect the TMCC base with it's y cable. First guess is just connect the MTH cable to the remaining connector after the other connector gets the TMCC base. But read thru the above thread.

I only run command engines, be they Lionel, Atlas, MTH, or K-line.  when setting the power on my throttles what do you recommend and why?  My ZW-Ls are only powering the track, no accessories so is there a downside to turning them all the way up?

The reason I am asking is that some of my engines appear to be crawling too much and to get them moving seems to be much more on the throttle (e.g., MTH subway at 20) are not moving at a pace I would consider fast.

I may be wrong, but you don't need the cab-1 anymore if you have a legacy base. Legacy can handle the TMCC engines for you. As far as connecting the TIU to Legacy. You need the cable from MTH and a Lionel LCS Ser2 (Info Here), since you are operating LCS (Since you have wifi). Please note that you will need to also purchase a PDI cable to connect the SER2 to your wifi module or other LCS module.

By the way, if you really wanted to connect your cab-1 to your setup, then you can add another SER2 with another PDI cable to do this. You can have as many SER2 as you like.
