I know this is probably a very basic question, but I have to ask it.  I have a friend who has a Layout using a Legacy System. He is using a Z4000, a Legacy Base, a TPC300 (to control his conventional and MTH Engines). He wants to purchase a DCS System to control all his MTH Engines, instead of conventional. What does he need to buy AND how does he interface the DCS Equipment with the LEGACY Equipment. How about a block diagram and info to achieve this. I run only TMCC/LEGACY and know "NOTHING" about DCS!!!

I run Legacy, TMCC (ERR kits) and DCS engines simultaneously even on the same loop.  It is nice to be able to purchase engines from any vendor without worrying about the command system.  MTH has a cable (I built my own) that runs from the TIU to the Legacy controller.  You need to follow Barry's wiring guidelines (he has an inexpensive book that will answer any questions) and with a couple of exceptions they will all run well together.  While the DCS to Legacy link exists with their cable, I have found that the way I run my trains, I use both DCS and Legacy controllers.  DCS can only run Legacy engines in TMCC mode which may or may not be a concern depending upon how you run your trains.

The real grit of this question depends on how the layout is wired.

IF it was wired in blocks you are probably in good shape, if it is wired in a Buss with no blocks you are likely to have have issues but they can be overcome.

Feel free to ask all the questions you have and someone will answer them.

When buying DCS I recommend Barry's book, available from the MTH website.

It contains a wealth of detailed and well explained material.

Assuming you have 2 loops of track separately powered....  (Or just one easily enough)

 

You will need an MTH TIU and an MTH DCS Remote.

 

Connect the 2 Power Power Outputs from the Z4000 to the two TIU Variable Channel Inputs.

 

Connect the 2 TIU Variable Channel Outputs to your Track.  (Assuming you have two different loops or blocks...)

 

Connect the U wire from the Legacy Base to the Outside rail of both loops.

 

You will not need the TPC300 in this configuration.  The TIU can control the variable voltage on the tracks.

 

Use the Legacy Remote to Control Legacy and TMCC engines.

 

Use the DCS Remote to Control MTH DCS and Conventional Engines.

I'm scanning through the messages here since I am getting the MTH system.  One thing confuses me.

 

Why are you using the variable outputs from the TIU?  Since they're all command, why would you not be using the fixed outputs?

It is also possible, depending on how much power you are feeding the TPC, to feed one or more TIU channels with the output of the TPC, thus using your Legacy remote to control the conventional engines as an alternative.  Provided you aren't overloading the current capacity of a TIU channel.

OK, if they're conventional, I can see the variable outputs.  I have to read more carefully.

I don't see why this wouldn't work.  Obviously, they're two different track blocks.  I believe that's what's being discussed here.  Ignore my previous silly question, I didn't notice they were conventional locomotives.
