Since May, I have acquired the Lionel Legacy #990 set as well as my second and third Legacy Diesels.

My questions are:

1.) do the engines have to be next to each other in a consist?

2.) If the answer to #1 is “no”, does that mean I can run the following configuarations??

Config 1:

Powered Legacy Unit at front of consist, Powered Legacy at end of consist

Config 2:

Powered Legacy Unit at front of consist, Powered Legacy unit middle of consist

Config 3:

Powered Legacy Unit at front of consist, Powered Legacy unit middle of consist Powered Legacy Unit at End of consist

While this question extends to all Legacy diesels/diesel electrics, I specifically want use configuaration #1 above with:

Lionel Amtrak F40PH Ph. III  6-82456

Lionel Amtrak F40PH Ph. II 6-82453

Finally, if this is helpful, my layout has:

#990 Base with included Y- cable that attaches to: TMCC command base....Wifi Module ....Two Serial Converter 2s: One that connects to MTH TIU and a TPC 400 And One that connects to a TPC 300. MTH TIU is in passive mode.

Layout is powered by 2 PW 180s, one goes to a TPC 400 is for outer loop of track, one goes to a TPC 300 for inner loop, both of which connect to MTH terminal boards with an inline fuse between TPC and board. 4 and all accessories turnouts are separately powered.

Thanks for any help!!

There is absolutely nothing that says they must be next to each other. Option one will definitely work with your proposed locomotives.

In general you only want to have train in between locomotives with the same EXACT controls and gear ratio. If they are different models I recommend trying to run them together first to ensure that they play nice. Hope this helped

Most and I emphasize most Legacy engines are programmed to run at or near the same speed with the same speed step.  The most notable exceptions are the engines with BEMF in smaller steamers and switchers.  The switcher though should know when they are in a MU with a road engine and adjust.

I second @zhubl Zachariah's suggestion and run them MU'd but disconnected just to confirm that they are running close to the same speed at the same speed step.  I have used Legacy engine throughout a consist without issue.  It really makes for a cool train.
