The following is part of the description in the Lionel catalog regarding Legacy operation by using Bluetooth.

"LEGACY® Control System equipped – able to run in LEGACY® Control mode, in TrainMaster® Command Control mode, or in Conventional mode with a standard transformer

  • Bluetooth® Control - Operate with Universal Remote or LionChief® App"

Do you need the Legacy base unit #990 to operate a Legacy engine with Bluetooth app on an Ipad or Android phone?

( Correct me if I'm wrong) Unless something has changed. Bluetooth does not give you full legacy features, in fact, I think TMCC will run a legacy locomotive better than the bluetooth.

Blue tooth, at least as far as my legacy H10 is concerned is for basic train control.

Realistic slow speeds and direction changes for things like switching is impossible with the app.

Its a neat option. "Yeah cool I can run my train with my phone", and thats about as far as it gets. I go right back to my good ole Legacy handheld.
