Hi guys, I just purchased this set from a train show. The set was advertised as new and everything looked to be in unused. First time on the track programming it into the legacy remote, really excited to run and one of the marker lights are out on the front of the engine. Everything else seems to work no issues except the one side green marker light.  I haven’t taken anything apart as of yet. My question to you guys is …if I took it apart would I see if there are any problems like a harness problem. The instructions states as I am sure everyone has read says LED’s are to be serviced by a Lionel repair shop.
What would you guys do .I don’t have any replacement bulbs and would have no idea what kind to get let alone where to find them.

please advise

Typically the class light LEDs are wired in parallel. One wire may have pulled out of its connector. Possible a wire was pinched when it was assembled. Next step is probably pull the shell.

Unfortunately Lionel has still not posted any parts blowup pictures for this engine so we have to guess what you have.

Well I opened up the shell looked over all the wires, no pinches or wires loose from any blocks or boards. It did however give me the opportunity to fluff up the smoke units for the whistle and the stack. I guess I’ll check Lionel's parts list maybe I’ll get lucky and the part won’t be too expensive. If there are any other suggestions out there please let me know

Well I emailed Lionel part support last night and got a response today but I don’t have any schematics on the engine that’s included in that kit and once they upload the information they would be able to help me out. I find it hard to believe that this is a brand new engine with internals that they never used before and can’t find out what harness they put in the locomotive. Maybe it’s just me

Micheal, according to the parts site it has an RCMC. Here is a photo of the connectors.

FMK should be front marker lights. Signal common marked “C” in the photo is return. You could pull that connector and verify if the wires go to the markers. I think the resistors are on the board so to be safe you can try lighting the markers by sticking a 3-400 ohm resistor in the connector after removing it from the board and apply 3-6 volts dc to it and “C”.

FWIW, …I have quite a few of Lionel’s J3’s ….I’ve had class lights do the same thing the OP’s is doing on 2 engines ( don’t ask how many I have ) …..the break occurred on both of mine, right where the they make the crazy bends to go up into the class light housing. If you have harvested the LED’s out of the smoke box front, try wiggling the one that is out to see if you can make contact,….have fun fixing it if this is the case,….a razor blade, a good pinpoint soldering iron, and a steady hand required,…..the earlier J3 Hudsons ( TMCC Odessy) share similar construction as far as class light installation,…...also, again, FWIW, that particular locomotive when run on the Pacemaker wouldn’t have class lights anyways,….but that’s just for us finicky NYC guys …..😉

Thanks Pete and Pat, yes that is the board I traced back from the wires and made sure the connections were good. I’ll try what you suggested. Pat thanks for the info and background on my small problem in the grand scheme of things. I really did not want to try to solder in another light to tell you the truth and I am going to check out the wiring one last time the bend is super aggressive going into the light bezels.

Thanks Guys
