Perhaps I'm not powering down correctly after use, but, batteries discharge when the unit is off, not in use.
I can put new, freshly charged rechargeable, or regular AA batteries in my remote, turn it off, and place it in the cradle, come back 2 days later and the batteries are dead, as though there is a draw on the batteries.
Is this normal, or does it appear that there is a problem i the remote

Sounds like a problem to me. Mine last weeks between charges if I don't use them. They do have a small residual current drain, but I've never measured it to see what it is.
Batteries may be discharging through the base if the base is off. To avert that cover the contacts on the cab2 with electrical tape.

That's what I figured, but thought I'd get some input before sending it back to Lionel again, just in case it was something I was or wasn't doing.
Base is off, and remote in cradle when trains are not being run.
I'll try it with fresh batteries, and leave it off the base over the weekend
If it discharges in the base, I'd still think something is wrong. That shouldn't happen.
I'd start by calling Lionel to see what they say.
I just lay a small thin piece of cardboard on the base before setting the Cab2 down when turning off the system. The next time at power up take it out. That way don't get a lot of drain on the batteries.
