Here is the question in a nut shell.

I am going to use a converted railroad lantern plugged into the surge suppressor to act as reminder to turn the power off the whole systems when I am not using it, my version of an idiot light. Since I going to use Barry latest version of how to wire a layout using DCS and Legacy. My concern is if add this light to the surge suppressor, am I add noise or something worst in the whole system electrical system that will cause the control system to go haywire? What type of light bulb should I use to avoid any problems if any? I currently have a compact fluorescent in the lantern. I was thinking of using one of those flicker light bulbs or am I making problems for myself with the control operation of the layout?

It use as close to a plain incandescent as possible if there are issues.  There likely would be no interference at all. Circuit wise not much different that the other household lights. They all connect.

I'd guess blinking might throw some noise. LED, I'm not to sure on cheapies. I've thrown a few out already due to buzzing and flashing (likely the rectifier going, the weak link?)(so much for those outlasting incandescents; less than a year and a dozen cooked easy at at least twice the price to $ x 7.)  Florecent is the worst for getting along well with other items; relies on a lot of high-volt pulsing in general.

A surge protector just eats excess voltage surges. There are power filters too, but unless you paid a lot at your computer store, I doubt you have filtering too.

It will help you notice for sure. I have a an old crossing gate lamp that supplies a red glow to see by right over my Z & KW.  In a darkened room it I can still see the power and the red light doesn't distract you from the layout.

I'll try to grab a pic soon... the room is occupied right now 😴💤

KRIS, tried again today. The post locked up  every time I try to use the attachment tool.  I need to try to post elsewhere with an attachment as that sometimes clears things up when this happens. So, maybe later... (check your in-box for now )

One last try...ha. Complaining in the text works nearly every time 😊IMG_20190227_230018~2
