Hi all.  At the P&P layout in Scottsdale AZ we have been using MTH engines successfully for a year or so on Dave Hikel's control system.  We have a ProtoNet box for the Legacy and TMCC on-line with the computer but lack the knowledge to implement the connection and the software. The Legacy controller "Y" cable is connected to the TMCC controller but the other end, which appears to be a serial cable, has yet to be connected to the ProtoNet box since the pinout is unknown.

Even if the cable is plugged into the ProtoNet box without the smoke leaking out, the control process is still a mystery.

Barry, or anyone familiar with the Hikel system, can you help?

Thanks

Paul,

What are you planning do with the ProtoNet/Legacy connection?

I had the Train Controller PC app [for layout control) connected to the Legacy Base via ProtoNet. You need to place a null modem connector between there Legacy serial port and the serial port for the ProtoNet box.

You cannot, however, use the ProtoNet device for either Lionel's LSU PC app or the DCS iOS app.

Hi Barry,

We would like to control the Lionel Legacy and TMCC in much the same way we control the MTH DCS engines, thru Train Controller Gold (TCG) and + Smarthands. The TCG operation is seamless and with a couple of iPads we can have one person running the layout and another running the engine(s).  Sure would be nice to do it with the Lionel engines.

The ultimate goal is to run trains automatically like our N and HO stablemates do already.

Thanks for the prompt reply (love your book!)

Hi Barry (again)

I just reread your first response and perhaps can clarify.  We have a three plug pre-made cable that is labeled "Legacy" (Which we connected to the Legacy base) "TMCC" (connected the the TMCC base) and a third end that looks like it will work in the ProtoNet box.  Should I assume it is a null modem type connection?

Assuming it works, how are Lionel engines addressed by TCG and +smarthands?

Thanks

Paul

Paul,

I have no idea.

The same way that you control DCS engines, once you create the connection to the Legacy base in Train Controller.

That's the best that I can do, since I no longer use Train Controller and have de-installed the package.
