What has been your experience with the Lionel 153IR controller? Will the infra red detector span 2 tracks? Will it activate 2 MTH Crossing gates? Your experience & thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have a few on my layout, and they work really good.One of mine spans 3 tracks and works great. I'm pretty sure it will activate MTH crossing gates.

I have 8 of them on my layout and they have worked perfectly for years (since Lionel introduced them). They will easily span 2 tracks, since you can adjust the sensitivity. I also have one of them operating 4 Lionel crossing gates so, I don't see where you would have any problem with MTH gates. You can also adjust the activation time so you can allow large consists to get by before the gates raise.

I concur with the above as my experience has been the same. I have 8 of them as well, with 4 of them bought when they first came out. They just work.
I span two tracks with a couple of them. I use a couple of them to trigger Lionel crossings, and an MTH Banjo Signal.
Right now I have two in use to control station stops on an elevated trolley line. Before installing I tested them and yes the IR can be detected across two tracks. The timer and sensitivity can be adjusted. They work perfectly for my needs.
