I have a Lionel PW 1666 2-6-2 that needs the contact shoes replaced. I bought a pair of replacement shoes and I see how to replace the shoes on the contact board from the service manual pages. I note that the contact board fits into slots in the sides of the motor/wheel assembly. How does one best remove the board to replace the shoes without breaking it?

Thanks,

You do not need to remove the contact board. Just use a small flat blade screwdriver and thru the end lift the copper contact strip enough so the old shoe pops out of the retaining hole. To put new shoe in just reverse.

Here is a link from Olson's toy train parts that shows how to lift spring to remove sliding shoe.

If you ever do need to remove the contact board Jeff Kane at Train Tender sells a very cool tool for that. If your wires are rotted or broken you will have to remove it in most cases.

Have you tried using it?

I ask because I didn't have much luck with mine.

If the insulation is damaged, I find it a whole lot easier to remove what is left of the insulation, take a piece of new insulation, and slide it over the bare wire.
