Lionel 18007 GS-2 Smoke Unit Issue

Not sure about the resistor option, but the #8100-60 unit would also work. Trainz has one for sale here. I haven't worked on these units, but judging by the pictures I'm not sure how easy replacing just the resistor would be.

Hi Jerry,

I'm working on the same unit right now, just unscrew the two screws that hold the top

lid on. Then you can just replace the resistor with another 27 ohm,make sure the positive side of the resistor doesn't touch ground in anyway, and you won't have a problem.

I recommend a 20 or 22 ohm resistor, you'll get better smoke.   I replaced one in a similar smoke unit, got lots more smoke.

Is this a new Legacy model?  I did a search for #18007 on Lionel's website and I couldn't find SP GS-2 18007.

The Legacy one has fan driven smoke, the 18007 has a mechanical E-Unit, much older.

It's the older model. Probably going to pull the unit sometime this week to see how difficult it is to open it. 

Gunrunner, what is the Lionel part number for a 20 or 22 OHM resistor?

There is no Lionel part number that I know of.  Elsewhere I detailed how I got mine.  I take a 3W 20 ohm wirewound resistor from Digikey and use a Dremel wire wheel to remove the powered ceramic coating.  This only takes a minute, it comes off very easily and doesn't damage the nichrome wire.  It makes a perfect smoke resistor.  I actually have a number of values I prepared the same way to experimentally find the best match.  For TMCC I settled on 20 ohms, it produces more smoke and doesn't overtax the smoke triac on the R2LC.  For conventional track powered smoke units, I've tried 22, 20, 18, and 16 ohm resistors,  The 18 or 20 ohm ones have been the best fit there as well.

Jerry, my 18007 had tubing running down to the cylinders for steam effect. These are by now probably very hard and need extra care when removing them.

My steam effect never worked anyways but I'll probably replace the line too.
