I'm a big consolidation fan and have 4 such MTH engines. A PRR H3, 2 H9's in NYC and Reading and an H10 in LIRR.  I also had a Lionel Consol years ago but a friend convinced me to sell it to him. Side by side the MTH 2-8-0 was bigger and supposedly truer to scale.

Was the 2-8-0 listed the to 2021 Vol-II catalog from the Lionel or the MTH tooling?  Would appreciate an insight here as I have yet to see any detail of the product tooling Lionel just purchased.

The NYC looks appealing to me...

Don't know if they are MTH tooling or not.  According to the new numbering scheme though, the 3rd & 4th number indicate category.  For these locos, it is 31 which is scale steam, 32 would be non-scale steam. Here is the chart that was posted somewhere on the forum previously.

Some time ago I asked the question whether Lionel had ever made (in the last 30 years) a Consolidation locomotive in either the Canadian National or Canadian Pacific road names because, to the best of my knowledge, they had never done either. Although there was only a limited response to my Post, the consensus was that they haven't. Consequently I really hope that the next time around (perhaps in the next catalog - please) Lionel will do a Consolidation in either CN or CP road names, because I know for a fact that CN had a ton of these engines during the steam era.

The new 2-8-0 is surely based on the TMCC version from some 15 years ago. At least they are attempting to do more road specific details. I have the NYC version pictured above along with its non prototypical SP number boards.

If I was looking for one with a specific roadname I would just get one as close as possible and reletter it. Not that hard really if the engine is black. The old lettering comes off easily without damaging the base paint.

As I'm sure you noticed, steam locomotives from Lionel or MTH have barely happened. The MTH CP Royal Hudson was the best of all. Your best bet for a Canadian 2-8-0 would be to purchase one of the new models announced or a previously produced one and re-lettering it. Waiting for one to be produced could be a very long wait if it happens at all.

You may want to email Mr. Muffin’s Trains.  They are doing a bunch of custom runs of the Consol.

U&D the Monon and PRR1950 - Well guys, although it was an 'on again, off again' bit of a saga Mr. Muffin has ultimately decided to order the CN 2-8-0 through Lionel.  Consequently it looks like my quest for a Lionel CN Consolidation will finally be achieved.

Thanks again to both of you and to Mr. Muffin for stepping up to the plate!

@PH1975 Woohoo! I’m really glad I suggested it and that you’re going to get your CN Consolidation.
