I would greatly appreciate any suggestions concerning an issue with a Lionel 2026. This locomotive has run flawlessly for several years until just recently. It will run in reverse without any problem but will no longer move forward. The locomotive will move a few inches if you give it push but after that all that happens is some buzzing which I assume is not a good sign. I don't let this continue as I am concerned about damaging the motor. I am wondering if this is a sticking E unit. If so, is it advisable to try to lubricate the E unit with WD40 or an electrical contact cleaner through the top of the shell where the three position switch is located? Thank you for any suggestions.

Sounds like eunit needs to be cleaned. Use electrical cleaner. Stray the drum and fingers.
Could also be brushes worn out, brush tensioning spring(s) not doing its job, or commutator bars need to be cleaned.
With a worm gear at the bottom of the armature (the thing that spins around), when you go one direction the armature is forced down, and the other direction, the armature is forced up. When forced down, the brush springs have to push the brushes down to maintain contact.
2026 is not a worm drive loco. The armature shaft is parallel to axles and all the gearing is spur gears. I would start with the e-unit, but also look at the quartering. Try running it with the side rods off.
Eeegads...
1. Never just spray some stuff into the shell.
2. WD40 is not a proper train cleaner/degreaser/lubricant.
3. Go to YouTube and find one of the excellent videos on how to service your engine properly.

Disassembly is not that difficult. This video is a decent guide:

It is probably the e-unit and there are other videos on servicing those.

Check this thread for a restoration on a 2026 I did a couple of years ago.
