Hearing conflicting information, recently purchased 3 Lionel 2037 Steam Engines, had them converted to take smoke fluid, rather than pellets.
How many drops of smoke fluid should I use. ??

No more than 6. The smoke chamber bowl is not very deep and the is no wick to absorb the extra liquid.
If you buy anymore Postwar steam, you don't need to convert the smoke unit. If the smoke unit still works you can use fluid in them. Same advice, 4/5 drops is enough.
Usually i put in 4 to 5 drops in the engines that were converted .
Learned the older pill units can take fluid as well and have tried and they work fine.
Which type can burn out if left to run dry the liquid type elements?
My friend has a couple of hundred pre-war and post-war steam engines, a great many of them pill type. He brings some over every Monday to run on my layout. We add the recommended 4 to 6 drops of smoke fluid and they smoke like gangbusters. No need for pills or converting the smoke units to ones made for liquid.
