Good morning and happy new year.  For Christmas we got one of my sons the above Lionel switcher locomotive.  Runs very well.  After running “yard operations” for a few days, the rear coupler no longer operates remotely.  The sound effect works, just no response or even typical buzz/vibration from the coupler.  Front one works fine.  Bought it at York from Brady’s Trains - very nice folks by the way - but they are outside Pittsburgh and I am outside DC.  Because the locomotive works fine in all other respects and the sound effect for the coupler works, I am thinking this is a simple wiring issue that I can ask a trusted local repairman to handle, but before having him crack something open I wanted to see if some of the folks here thought I was missing something.  Thank you in advance.

I can't think of anything you're missing, the coupler should function.  Obviously, you can do a close physical inspection of the coupler and see if there's a broken wire outside the shell that you can see.  Also, stop trying to actuate the coupler until it's fixed, if there is a bare wire, firing the coupler with that wire grounded is likely to damage the LCP board, then the repair gets a whole lot more expensive.
