I am in the process of restoring a Lionel 2332 (black). I have a couple questionsthat I would be needing answered. The squawk box isn't working when I apply a 9-volt battery (wires are soldered). It clicks and there is power going to it, but the coil (not relay) gets hot. Is it normal for the coil to get hot or is there a short in It?

Also, the e-unit does not buzz at all. All the wiring is intact (all factory original wires). Is the coil also busted or a short somewhere?

Thank you.

There is a fiber board with the lever on it that turns the e unit on and off. One wire from the e unit coil should go to the terminal on the  end of the board where the switch makes contact. There is a terminal at the other end of the board where the collector roller, horn relay and one head light connect.  The other coil wire should go to that terminal. Power to those two points should cause the coil to be energized. If not, be sure the two coils wires are connected at these two points.  It could also be a mechanical problem.  Check to see that the plunger moves freely in the coil.  It should be clean and free of any oil.
