Ordered this set, just arrived today, have not opened it yet. Found a video review of the set, looks like Lionel did quite a nice job on this starter set. Here is the video I found for the set.

Looks great. Can't tell if the wheels are the powdered aluminum like many MPC or chromed steel. Only issue is that I wish the caboose was the PW SP style rather than the MPC caboose. But both styles are relevant in Lionel history.
I got mine today. Wow, this a spectacular set for the price. Retro personality. Rugged play value. A heavy set. Nice colors and content. My only nit with this and all of Lionel's new starter sets is the switch to the side opening boxes where one slides the tray out. A lift off lid reduces wear and tear and allows one to quickly see the set and lift the clamshell frames out. The wheels are chromed steel it seems with painted silver rims and diecast baldwin disc inserts.

Lionel needs to add more photos of this set to their webpage. Just about all of the starter sets have additional photos added. The single photo in their catalog/webpage does not due this set justice.
Assuming you have unpacked yours Ed.........What are your impressions.
Thanks
Just opened the PRR decorated one for Christmas. Glad it's black and not green. Was pleased with operation but after a few trips around the test loop the engine went dead. I'll be sending it to Lionel. But still like it. If they make one in LIRR or Reading Id get that too.

Here is the 675 loco from the set. Plan to get some better photos over the next few days. By comparison I've also also posted a photo of the plastic bodied 8001 from 1980. My 8001 is quite an oddball as it should have a four wheel trailing truck and also a tender with the Mechanical Sound of Steam. The tender on my 8001 has no MSOS or even the cutout in the frame for it.

Was curious if the set contents were based on a Postwar set. Turns out 1947 set 2121WS is the inspiration for this set. One minor issue, the tank car in the new set should be #2555, as #2755 was available in only 1945.
