I have a LIONEL 48051 Transformer With Power Supply from a 1980s/1990s ready to run set. It still works and I was wondering if it was Ok to use it with other more modern engines.
It is limited in power, but no reason not to use it. With any transformer and any layout, it is always best practice to utilize strategic use of external breakers and TVS diodes (discussed in my post here: https://ogrforum.com/...6#157829273320561916 )
It's 40 watts output, and fused, a breaker won't provide any useful further protection. It's as safe as any transformer, none have transient voltage suppression built-in.
I had it running a loop of Fastrack around the Christmas tree no problem. The I added a couple manual switches and another loop of track to run a reverse loop. I had to break out a CW-80 to make that work.
